The recorder is over one year old and has recorded fine til recently. I use DVD-R as always, same brand. Also DIVX recordordings from downloads are now not playing. Format notplayable errors. With the HDD/DVD recordings I noticed progress of high speed recording reaches 99% then fails. Also there appears a band about 2MM towards the inner part of DVD. Do I have a failed laser or is there a software problem?

Re: Not completing recording from HDD to DVD
DVD's are burned from the center out, so if you're seeing a small band at the center, it sounds like the laser is overheating and quitting very early in the burn process. No idea how to fix it, maybe blow it out with canned air? Good luck, sorry I can't help more.....

HD takes more info and if you don't have a fast enough processor to handle this, that might be the problem.
The age of the recorder would tell you that. If it's 3 years old that might be it. Also how can the recorder record the HD signal unless it has the right tuner??
I mainly use my DVR to record TV shows on DVD-RAM discs (Panasonic brand or Maxell). I've had no problems with the DVD-RAM discs. However, today when I put a DVD-R disc in the recorder, I got an "Incompatible Disc" error message. I tried a second disc from the same set, and got the same message. I tried out some of the DVD-Rs that I recorded last year and I could read them. Tried a DVD-RAM. That was OK. So, I tried another DVD-R disc. That one is OK. I don't know if the problem is that these DVD-Rs are getting a little old (2 years??) or if the recorder is developing its own problems reading discs.
Only use one of the disc types that is listed in the manual that they have actually tested on unit. If the HDD recordings were made in HQ mode, then you will only be able to fit a one-hour or less recording on a DVD. You cannot reverse this at this point. For future HDD recordings, set the record mode to 4hr or higher.
When you put your disc in and its ready for copying over through Dubbing - when you see the quality ie xp - just press right or left til the FAST sign comes up. it maynot always come up if the recording time is any longer than an hour or less than 30 mins.
I was having the same problem if I used DVD+R blanks, but the programs would record fine if I used Memorex DVD+RW rewritables. Until today, that is - now it won't let me burn anything from the HDD to a disk! My 3455H is about two years old.
Gotta say I'm quite disappointed with it, and would never consider another Philips product. :(
