Re: ethernet card

You either have a bad ethernet port on your modem or pc. If your modem has a USB port, hook that up and run the modem disc to load the driver for USB. You may still be able to get online that way.

I have a Dell dimension 350 pc with just a modem connection for a phone line. I just got cable installed which has the ethernet hookup. i would like to still use my 350 with win. 98 if i can. how can i...

Does your cable modem have wireless internet? If so, you can buy a Netgear wireless usb port adapter for about $20 and use that to connect wirelessly to the internet. Your pc has usb port connections - right? (Usb port looks like a rectangle)

If you don't want to use a wireless connection you can purchase a cable modem with a usb connection for about $65. You run the ethernet cable to the modem and then a usb cable from the modem to your pc.

If you have a serial cable connection on your pc (looks like a round circle with tiny metal pins in it) you can buy a gender changer and convert that to usb (in case you dont have a usb connection or need another one). You can buy one for about $11.

You can buy an I/O Gear bluetooth usb adapter for $13 and pick up the internet via bluetooth by putting it in your usb port but I'm unsure how well it would work with Win 98.

If you have another pc that has an ethernet connection you could use good old fashioned bi directional printer cable and network both computers together. You may need to upgrade to win xp for networking capabilities.

How to configure a wired/wireless home network

In this guide I will go over the steps needed to setup a basic home network. In this network, we will have a desktop computer, a wireless laptop, printer, router and cable modem.

*All devices should be turned off at this point*

1) The cable modem which is usually provided by your internet service provider, should be connected to your coaxial cable(broadband internet) that is active, and can be anywhere in your household. This modem can also be for DSL connections(phone line).

*If you only have one device you wish to connect to your home network, this device can plug directly into the modem and you will not need a router*

2) Next, you will need to connect the router to the modem. You will use a Cat5 cable to do this. It is also commonly referred to as a Ethernet cable or patch cable. On the modem, you will see a Ethernet port, plug one end of the cable to this port. On the router, you will see many Ethernet ports. The port you wish to use to connect the modem to the router is usually separated from the other ports and may be labeled (modem or internet). The ports labeled 1-6 for example are your LAN ports and normally for computers etc. So, plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the port labeled modem or internet that is away from the other ports.

3) Now, for each device you wish to have wired network access(computers, laptops, game consoles) you will need to plug an Ethernet cord into each one, and plug the other end into one of the LAN ports on your router.

4) Power on the cable modem, wait 30 seconds then power on the router.

4) Next, you will need to power on your desktop in order to configure the router. Please consult your routers manual in order to do so.

5) Once your router is configured, you should be able to access it from any of your devices and these devices should have access to the internet. If you wish to have wireless access also, you will need to setup wireless security, password and a SSID. Your SSID is the name you give the router, and this is the name that will show up when you search for routers within range of your computer. Below is a picture of a list of wireless access point SSID.

6) At this point there are several ways to connect a printer. For simplicity, you can connect it to one of the computers, and give access to the other computers. The following guide will go over this step,

I hope this guide helps you in your quest to setup a basic home network. There are many factors that come into play and additional steps may need to be taking but this will get you started!

I have a Compaq Presario SR1630NX and I cannot connect to the internet. When I plug the Ethernet cable into the back of the machine, the port does not light up. Is that normal, or is the port bad? Please...

Not normal. Try plugging in a friend's laptop to check out the cable and network. If that machine goes online, your port may not be configured or the ethernet card has failed. Device manager in Control Panel canel give some diagnostics and can check for new drivers.

I cannot connect to the internet. I was told we need 3 network adapters and we only have one. Is this why all of a sudden we cannot connect?

For connecting to the Internet you need only 1 network adapter. But you need to configure it properly.

HP 4450 desktop, not have a ethernet port

No you can't.
But you have ywo other options to use broadband connection.
1. Use a USB modem, or
2. Install a network card to be able to use an ethernet cable.

A network card cost around $10.00.

We re booted the computer and have to use a usb

Not sure what the problem is, but from what i am reading i am suprised that anything worked at all. A modem jack in your computer is for telephone lines, and the cable modem needs a cat 5 network cable as well as a ethernet card attatched to your computer. ethernet card in your computer cat5 cable runs from the card to the cable modem. Magic jack requires a usb connection as well as a broadband connection to work.

I have a linksy instant broadband etherfast cable/dsl router and I have WOW internet service. I'm been using a dell computer and just obtain a EMac computer and would like to share the WOW internet...

Which Linksys router do you have?
If it has 4 ethernet ports in the rear of the router you will need CAT 5 cable to run from the router to the computer...
One cable per computer...
The computer needs to have a network card in it...

So the setup is... WOW modem to Internet input on Linksys router and cables to each computer from the Linksys...

Internet connect is not working

It could be a problem with the card or port itself, but it could also be a problem with the drivers. Check to see if the proper drivers are loaded for your network card - for example, if there was a recent network driver update download from Microsoft, uninstall it.

If this is not the case, try unistalling the drivers entirely, and then reinstall them from a fresh copy either from the original CD or downloaded from the vendors web site.

If that does not help, it could be a problem with Windows - I'm guess it's Windows XP? If something has messed up the TCP stack, Dial-A-Fix would be able to rebuild the stack for you.

If none of these help, then a physical failure is probably the problem. You could then replace the NIC (network interface card), or if onboard (that is, part of your motherboard and can not be removed), disable it in the BIOS, and add a PCI NIC card to the machine.
