T30 won't turn on

I have an IBM ThinkPad T30. I push the power button and all five icons light up. After about a second, four turn off leaving only the "Z" icon lit green.
On the monitor the battery icon is green and the moon icon is not lit.
No water has gotten anywhere near this computer. I was using it this after noon, turned it off, and now (~3hrs later) it will not turn on.

I had tried the statical lockup solution, I just didn't know the terminology. What I ended up doing was removing the battery, removing the CMOS battery, removed the memory, removed the HDD, removed the DVDROM, then removed the keyboard/power button and used OFA to blow out any debris. While I was in there, I removed the top panel completely and blew all the dust out. Then I reassembled the entire PC, reseated all the peripherals, and booted up without the battery installed. I reset the BIOS settings, and successfully booted windows. Tehn I powered it down through the start menu and reinstalled the battery. All seems to be OK now. Thanks for the assistance!

Same problem as Ericstrash but problem still exist after changing motherboard.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T30. I push the power button and all five icons light up. After about a second, four turn off leaving only the "Z" icon lit green.

No water has gotten anywhere near this. The problem came about once I attempted to fix one of the RAM slots by re-soldering. Since then I have replaced the motherboard and it's still doing the same thing as ericstrash Jan 2008 mentioned his is doing. I tried all the advice that was posted as of Feb 08 2008 with no luck. Is there any additional advice available? What the chances of the inverter (LCD) being bad? Please help

I was trying to boot to a USB floppy drive. The Boot Selection screen came up (1 Fxx key to boot normally, another to go to BIOS setup, another to boot to an alternate device). The PC hung. I pushed the power button to force shutdown (10 second push). Since then, on power-up all 5 LEDs come on, then just the power-on LED, and nothing else happens. Powers down OK with power switch.

I have removed RAM, Hard Drive, Keyboard, backup battery, main battery, and no improvement. Held power button down for 1 minute (static discharge clear resolution, if I remember correctly), still no improvement. Replaced backup battery, then RAM, still no fix.

Same here. One day I was using my T30 2366 without problems. Next day press power button and nothing: No boot, no video, nothing happens. Power light is on, Fan is working, HDD too (it sounds) but the screen is black, I tried to switch RAM with my presario C304 but it wont fit (why?  its the same kind) Same thing with external monitor attached. I opened the thing up to sense CPU´s temp. with laptop ON: It gets hot as it should be. I dont want to send it to service (it would be cheaper to buy another one)  It would be nice to hear Any more ideas....

It might have some statical lockup

Here is the steps that you may try
Disconnect the AC adaptor, take the battery out, press the power button and hold about 7 second. Connect the AC adaptor and turn the unit on. If issue persists please post for further diagnostic.

Good Luck

This is a difficult problem to diagnose, there are many reasons it could happen. I can give you some suggestions about what you can try:

1) Check your power supply, try to run on batteries instead, or if you are running on batteries, take the battery out and try running only on AC

2) Reseat the memory, i.e. take it out, put it back in, make sure it's snugly in

3) Reseat the hard drive, just like you did with the memory

4) Check if the power button is making intermittent contact. Remove the top panel and inspect the power button's contacts for dirt/debris.

You will need to refer to your thinkpad's manual for instructions on how to do the above operations. There are specific disassembly instructions. You can find a copy here:

I tried most of what has been written above. My problems seems to be with the Memory slots. If I re-seed the memory it seems to works. I've now wedged some folded paper between the cover and the memory. No problems yet.

This message is just a huge thank you to Frosty555... It had been three days now that my T30 wouldn't boot, or maybe once in fifty tries, just to freeze few secondes after....
There was actually a dirt under the RAM which prevented the T30 to work... I was almost resigned to buy another one, but thanks to you, I saved some good money !

Ibm thinkpad t30 will not start

You should charge the battery longer about four hours. Then the light should be green. Try. If that don't work disconnect the battery and check for anything. Connect your battery again and take a look. If it still isn't functioning please let me know.

How to get rid of numberlock in ibm thinkpad t30

Hi Ritadeng,

On the Thinkpad T30, the number lock key can be turned on or off by pressing the shift-key and the scroll-lock key. The scroll lock button is found at the top of the keyboard between the PrtSc button and the Pause button.

You should see the light with the arrow and the number 1 inside (just above the F7 key) turn on and off when you press this.

Hope this helps!

Hello I ahve worked on several of these. The problem is the Jack on the motherboard. You need to get a motherboard that is brand new. The jack from pluging in and out all the time makes a hairline crack near the jack.

No power on my thinkpad 2366-41u

I have seem power jacks break sometimes - was the machine working until the battery died??
if it knows its plugged it (charge light comes on) but does not turn on, it could be a bad keyboard (the power button is part of the keyboard) or some other internal problem. Hard to say without having spare parts around or a qualified hardware tech to check out the machine.

You could always order a keyboard and try it -they are cheap online and easy to install (i think 3 screws on the bottom of the machine with a keyboard icon next to the screw holes)

Hope this helps!
