Question about D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem/Wireless Router 4-Port Switch, 802.11g, QoS (DSL-2640B)

1 Answer

D-link 2640 i've installed a d-link 2640 adsl router. both the wireless side and the dsl side seem to be working ok - if i connect via wireless link i get assigned an IP address, and the connection to the DSL provider works (i can browse the net, connect to email servers etc). but if i enable WAP security i have a problem. i get connected briefly - can connect to the ISP for a while (less than a minute) then the "wireless meter" shows 0% and i lose the connection. This doesn't happen with security disabled. I have this same problem with various clients (Ubuntu Gutsy/Win XP/Nokia E61) so i am (reasonably) sure the problem is with the router setup (or the router) and not on the client side. any idea what the problem could be? thanks for your help

My company provided me wired internet using Paradyne 6381 wired modem. it works fine. I have D Link 2640 T wirelss modem + router available with me. Please advise me how do I connect available D link 2640...

Since your D-Link 2640 is a modem + router it may not work the way you intend.

You need just a wireless router without modem.

Run a small Ethernet patch cable from your Paradyne modem into the WAN port on your router, you can plug your existing Ethernet cable into one of the other LAN ports on the router, then access the router setup using the computer connected to the Ethernet cable using a browser and putting the router's IP address into the address line of your browser. It will most likely be or

Once you have configured the Wi-Fi router you will have your wireless network. Full instructions should come with the router.

Routers are available for as little as $29.95 but expect to pay closer to $79.95 for satisfactory speed and capability.

I recently moved from Cable ISP to DSL ISP service. For the DSL service, I was asked to configure my Router to use PPPoE with Dynamic IP addressing. I also provided the router with my username and password...

The reason you have no internet is because the router is specifically for cable. your description contains errors what i think you mean is that you have gone from cable dsl to an adsl, correct me if i am wrong. Basically your modem connected to your router via an ethernet cable and then the router fed the wireless signal to your wireless devices or via ethernet through the 4 ports in the back. With adsl you have a feed from your phone line to an adsl modem so the only way for you to get the dsl router working is to have two ethernet leads connecting to your pc, one from the modem to the pc and one from the pc to the router. You would also need to setup internet sharing on the pc thats connected to both devices.

Either do it that way or buy an adsl router

Wireless is not working on my D link 2640 router however wired connections are working properly.

try to update the wireless driver of your computer. check if your computer uses wireless utility other than windows (ex: intel proset wireless). if yes, uninstall it and restart the computer.
