Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

1 Answer

Sticky keys Somehow I got 2 calculators, an 85 and recently an 83+ that exhibit the same problem: Some keys are hard to press, almost click and definitely take more than the required force to actuate. I removed all the back screws and trying to prop the front-face open, but couldn't hatch it as something inside seems to is still holding those halves. Is there a special technique for servicing the inside? has anyone encountered the same problem?

I fixed the problem myself. Both calculators "sticky" keys were caused by either coffee or soda spills. Before you start dismantling your calculator, I recommend vividly that you take a picture of the keyboard layout! I downloaded one on my laptop and enlarged it while performing the following procedure.

    1. Please refer to the detailed procedure athttp://www.ftp83plus.net/overclocA.htm
You may use a good quality tiny flat screwdriver to remove those screws. Optician grade or Allen wrench are just as effective, if you don't have the proper Torx driver.

    2. Once the bottom screws are removed, you need to exert some pressure on the ridge side of the upper (key side) half, at the position where the clip is located. You won't see the click unless your calculator has a transparent case. While pressing there, wiggle to prop that lower bottom half. Voila! it's all separated.!

    3. Next, holding the calculator display down and away from you, gently lift the bottom half, wiggle a bit, and push it forward to unhook the top clip.

    4. Now you can see the aluminum foil covering your calculator's printed circuit board. Discharge yourself from electrostatic electricity by touching a drain pipe underneath your kitchen or bathroom vanity. Then, unscrew both little Phillips screws to remove that shield-foil. Watch out for stuck keys that will fall off when you take the rubber keypad and gather them in one place. Next, remove all the other screws holding the circuit board using extra caution to not bend or break the flexible circuit that connects the display. Finally while holding both the display and circuit board together, remove them out of the case and put them away on a clean plate, so the dust won't accumulate on the copper traces.

    5. The easiest way to clean the coffee or soda stains is to rinse the keyboard case, the rubber keypad and and all the loose keys under hot tap water. Make sure there is a screen to prevent those tiny from falling into the disposal.

Although this is a super easy procedure that took me 10 minutes. Use common sense throughout though!. It's a great feeling to restore those stuck keys to their original setting. So don't mess it up rushing into sloppy work. Be patient and you'll be probably gather enough confidence to fix your laptop or desktop keyboard, should they exhibit the same symptoms.

    Happy dismantling!

Try running a flat-head screwdriver along the "seam"-line of the calcuator, that should pop it open.

0,1,4,7 Keys acting up. I have a ti-83 and

first of all i would give a factory reset a try, if you press 2nd then the + button then scroll down to reset and do a full factory reset, that might fix your problem if it's software based, which would be my guess since it happened after you did something.

Somehow you're calculating 12!/(5!/7!).

Press 1 2 MATH left-arrow 4 / 5 MATH left-arrow 4 / 7 MATH left-arrow 4 ENTER to calculate the desired value. Alternatively, you can press 1 2 MATH left-arrow 3 5 ENTER or 1 2 MATH left-arrow 3 7 ENTER to calculate the same thing.

My TI-83 calculator doesnt gives me the solutions for tangents that have a negative number. Ex. tan(-1) -5/2

Once you reset your calculator, everything should be fine. Sometimes your calculator's memory stores your cos, tan, and sin and messes up your calucations.T o reset your calculator:
  1. Press 2nd then MEM (which is above the + key)
  2. Press 7 to reset
  3. Press 2 for default
  4. Press 2 again to reset defaults
  5. Press enter
  6. Done.
You should be able to get the answer for that, which is 3.8935, in radians at least. :)

Hi imagenius1,

You need to free up some memory. Try clearing your RAM memory. Your calculator should operate properly afterward.

If the steps above did not reset the memory to your Ti 83 family calculator try the procedures below.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.

If you have a straight Ti 83 without the Plus or, Silver Edition label goto (Procedure 2) below. If your Ti calculator is a Ti 83 Plus or better goto (Procedure 1).

(Procedure 1).

  3. Remove all of the batteries including the round lithium battery for 5 minutes. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and turn the calculator on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

  4. If the above process did not reset your calculator. Try re-doing (Procedure 1) and, extend the time in step 4, by 5 minutes to 10 minutes before you put all the batteries back in the calculator.

Ti-83 won't turn on

Make sure you have the batteries in correctly. You may want to put fresh ones in for these procedures to work. The batteries alternate negative, positive, negative, positive. The first time I put my batteries in, I had one backwards and, it was hard to see that it was in backwards.

Make sure the IO ports at the top or, button of the calculator are clean. You don't want a dirty connection missing the procedure up later on.

Please be prepared to re-install the calculator's OS if you run through this process.

Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds. Now, Pressing the [2nd] key followed by pressing and releasing the up arrow; repeat as necessary. Is the screen showing any activity? If not continue the process.
  1. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR],
reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the
message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message. If calculator did not display the message try pressing and releasing the [2nd] key followed by pressing and releasing the up arrow for one second. Goto step 2.
  2. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [DEL] key. While holding [DEL], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display
"Waiting...Please install calculator software now". Follow the instructions for the
TI-83 family or TI-84 Plus family to reinstall the calculator operating system. If the calculator did not turn on connect the calculator to the computer and open Ti Connect. Next, open Device Explorer. Is the calculator asking to be installed? goto step 3.
  3. Steps to re-installing the operating system:

~Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the PC and the calculator.
~Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
~Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS. When or, if the calculator install the fresh OS goto step 4.

  4. Remove all of the batteries including the round lithium battery for 5 minutes. After the 5 minute period, reinsert all of the batteries and turn the calculator on. Adjust the contrast if necessary.

If this process did not work for. Try re-doing the process and, extend the time by 5 minutes before you put all the batteries back in the calculator.
