This is a format problem, unfortunatley the mac has a different file system than a regular PC has. A mac can write PC files and mac files. PC's typically are not vice versa in writing to a mac hard disk. Only way around this one is to format the drive to be a PC drive. Then the mac and the PC should see it.

Unable to read external HDD after plugging it to a Mac (previously it is readable via a Windows PC)

Chances are it was formatted as NTFS format by the PC which is not MAC compatible. You will need to reformat the drive in HFS format if you want it to work as a MAC disk only or in FAT32 format if you want to read it in PC and MAC machines.

Are there any applications in use when you try this?
If not, you may need to repair permissions on the files using disk utility -
with the file selected, go to file/get info and there should be a series of checkboxes explaining ownership permissions and if the file is readable/writable. If it says they are read-only, this is your problem... Go to utilities/disk utility, and repair the file.
Good luck.

External hard drive read only on my mac?

That's a very strange occurrence, I agree with you. The good news is that one of the standard administrative applications included with Mac OS X will doubtless fix what's happened on your disk, which is that a folder permission has somehow been messed up.
The program you need is Disk Utility and you can find it in Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility. Then simply select the drive you want to fix:

I need someone to edit my current wordpress theme so I can add custom css. Says not writable, even though my host has allowed access via ftp.

May be a file permission problem. Use an ftp client like filezilla and configure it to the host's ftp login account. Then try changing the file permission for that particular file. Go here to find more about file permission.

Got a new imac moved ms office file to my book -

Hi,

Try to change the File system of the hard drive to FAT. It is currently in NTFS. Mac recognizes NTFS file system as read only. You must use the disc utility and format it with a volume format of MS DOS.

By changing it to MS DOS (FAT) you can use it with Mac and PC. Readable and writable.

The hard drive volume format is only for MAC. Check the volume format if it is MAC OS Extended or MAC OS Extended (Journaled). If it is, then change it to MS DOS to make it readable and writable to a PC and MAC OS

Not reading dvd r or rw as writable disk

It sounds like you are having issues with all DVD writable disks. From the specs I was able to find online about your DVD writer, DVD+RW discs may not be compatible with the the drive. Make sure you are using DVD-RW (note the minus instead of +). I think you might need to reinstall your DVD drivers. This should solve the issue.

Switching to a Mac

Your hard drive is probably formatted with the NTFS file system which is read only on MAC. The following article should guide you through making your drive writable on the MAC system. http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifehack/how-to-read-and-write-ntfs-windows-partition-on-mac-os-x.html Regards, Armando
