Re: Permission Issues

This is a format problem, unfortunatley the mac has a different file system than a regular PC has. A mac can write PC files and mac files. PC's typically are not vice versa in writing to a mac hard disk. Only way around this one is to format the drive to be a PC drive. Then the mac and the PC should see it.

Have you tried it on another PC. If yes and its readable then may be its your PC bios problem or else may be your hard drive is having some issues. Check for that.

Unable to read external HDD after plugging it to a Mac (previously it is readable via a Windows PC)

Chances are it was formatted as NTFS format by the PC which is not MAC compatible. You will need to reformat the drive in HFS format if you want it to work as a MAC disk only or in FAT32 format if you want to read it in PC and MAC machines.

I am using Mac and I can not change the permission on my hard drive 320 G Signature Mini to write it only lets me read what do I ...

Ahhh, this is a common problem. The only file system that is both Windows and Apple compliant is the FAT32 file system format. You will have to back up everything and reformat to FAT32.

If you use FAT32 you are restricted to on 4GB files... That means no movies, no long recording, nothing :-/

You can format the HDD with your Apple computer and have no restrictions. That file format is called Mac OS Extended Journalled. I reccomend this but keep in mind, it is NOT readable with all non-Mac friendly operating systems, especialy Windows :)

External hard drive read only on my mac?

That's a very strange occurrence, I agree with you. The good news is that one of the standard administrative applications included with Mac OS X will doubtless fix what's happened on your disk, which is that a folder permission has somehow been messed up.
The program you need is Disk Utility and you can find it in Applications --> Utilities --> Disk Utility. Then simply select the drive you want to fix:

I have a new macbook pro and want to copy files from my PC to my Mac. As advised by the Mac store I first plugged my MyBook into the Mac (which presumably formatted it and has set up Time Machine). ...

Hmmn. Far easier, I would think, to share the files via the network (if both machines are on the same network.) Check this link:

Using the MyBook would be faster if there is a LOT of data, though.

What OS are you running on the PC?

Try to change the File system of the hard drive to FAT. It is currently in NTFS. Mac recognizes NTFS file system as read only. You must use the disc utility and format it with a volume format of MS DOS.

By changing it to MS DOS (FAT) you can use it with Mac and PC. Readable and writable.

Im trying to copy from mac to pc using seagate removable hard drive and its not working? When i plug the Seagate into my PC nothing happens

The hard drive volume format is only for MAC. Check the volume format if it is MAC OS Extended or MAC OS Extended (Journaled). If it is, then change it to MS DOS to make it readable and writable to a PC and MAC OS

Switching to a Mac

Your hard drive is probably formatted with the NTFS file system which is read only on MAC. The following article should guide you through making your drive writable on the MAC system. Regards, Armando
