Vizio VP42HDTV sound no picture

Tv has very low hour use in my bedroom (120 hrs.). Went to turn on and I had sound and no picture or menu display. Tried doing what Vizio says to do on there site unlug for 3 minutes to reset with no results. looked for blown fuse and they are still white. from what I have read on the forums it could be a bad power supply. Is there someting else I need to look at or should I just try changing out the power supply. Production date is October 2006 and like I say very low hours. Thanks for any help

I have the exact same problem, I tried replacing the power supply but it didn't fix the problem. Did replacing the fuses work? Thanks

Where do you find the fuses

  • sandiegoman Jun 19, 2008

When I first bought in 2006, I had the unit for about a week, and then the picture went out. I exchaned it at Costco, and the new one has been working ever since...until today. There was a click, and then there was no picutre, or any media, but the sound works fine.

I've had this same set for about 18 months. It worked fine until mid-week, and then the picture went out (sound still works fine). I reset the power by flipping the switch on my strip surge protector, turned it back on, and the picture came back (for about 45 minutes), and then went out again.

This is the TV in my gym, so I only use it for about 60-90 minutes at a time.

I'm guessing that its not fuses, and I would have thought that if the power supply was bad, resetting the Power (unplugging it) wouldn't bring the picture back.

    Any other ideas?

Mine just went out today. I've had it since April of 2007. I watch it frequently, but still, it's quite new for a tv. The tv was fine, i walked into the other room but went i returned the sound was still on, but the screen was black. no menu shows up or any remote commands. it changes the channels and adjusts the volume, but has no picture whatsoever. Checked inputs and power source. Where are the fuses to check? i read that on another comment...

I have the exact same problem. Vizio tech says he suspects that the backlight has failed and says I should have a pro come out and fix it on site.

I have this problem as well on my LCD HDTV. When I first turn on the tv, I will get sound with no picture. I then turn off, and turn back on; then I will get the picture again. I think something is going bad...

we are currently experiencing the same problem. we purchased our set in Feb of 07. we woke up this morning with sound and a black screen. it will not respond to the remote or any of the power buttons. i am just a bit angry right now to be friendly about it. has anyone found a resolution to this problem. is it just bad fuses?

42 inch HD flat screen worked great. The picture is now black. I called the service number and followed their directions to get the picture back.

A waste of time. My Vizio is only 8 months old. I found the detailed warranty information online. I will never purchase this product again and I will tell my family and friends not to purchase the product.

I Have a Vizio VP42HDTV with no picture-just audio. I read a Lot of similar Posts and this is an LG made TV with notorous bad Y sustain board(has 1 blown fuse). You have to replace the Y and Z boards to be sure and it is very expensive. Visio and LG should pay for this-there are thousands of similar complaints and this is a factry defect-usually right after warranty expires.

My VIZIO P42HDTV10A had sound but no picture. I checked the fuses with a continuity tester and found one of the fuses on the board that controls the picture was bad. With a little luck this will solve the problem, and save me a $400 repair with about an hour of my time and $3.00 spent at radio shack. The tester did cost me $19.00. So all together a $25 solution.

Where were the fuses? Are there schematics of the board that I can find online?

Yes you need to check the fuses for continuity first. They may look good but could still be bad. Do that with an ohm meter. Let me know if you have one. Thank you and have a good day. jay

The LCD screen is dark with no sound or picture when turned on.

I had the same problem after having a Vizio for 2 and a half years. I left the room for a minute, i came back and the screen went black. There was still power to the unit and you could see that the back light was working, just no picture, no sound, and you couldn't use any of the buttons. The only way to turn it off was to unplug it. It would then start up, with the Vizio logo going from orange to white, and then do the same thing all over, no pic or sound.

HOW I FIXED MINE:Look through the back vents for a white light to make sure the backlight still works. I ordered a new "main PCB" from (you can also use This is the circuit board with all of the inputs on it (hdmi, cable, etc.) I opened it up, disconnected the old one, put in a new one and now it works fine. I used both serial numbers on the board to search for it online. It cost me $144 to do it, but that's better than $450 for a new TV. My tv is the vx32l hdtv10a. I hope that helps.

For me the part number was either (depending on the vendor) : 0171 2272 2174 or it was 3632 0212 0150. Check your circuit and see if any of those numbers match up.

Picture went out on p50hdm Vizio Plazma tv after loud POP

It's either the backlight lamp or backlight inverter is busted due to a power failure or fluctuation. Here's how to determine which is which:
  1. Grab a flashlight.
  2. Turn on the TV.
  3. Shine the flashlight onto the screen.
  4. If you cannot see any display even a faint one, the backlight inverter is dead, else the backlight lamps are busted.
  5. Replace which ever is the culprit.

Do you have back light when turning on the TV? if you do then just replace the main board should resolve the problem. if you do not have back light, you will need to replace the inverter board(s) depending on your model. The inverter board(s) is located on the left side of the TV facing back of TV. you may have two inverter boards depending on your model. the other is located on the right side of the TV. Both mount vertically.

Vizio vx42l hdtv back light

If backlight went out then sound should still work. Are there any indicator lights to show power is coming on anymore? Try unplugging for 30 seconds, hit power button a few times, then plug back in and try to turn on. This drains any capacitors of power to attempt to reset (basically clearing the TV's throat).

Can also try something on a different input. If current input is composite, S-video, or component, try using DVI or HDMI connection as this uses a different board in the TV. If that fixes it, then at least you can try to replace one board instead of entire tv. :)
