I have the same problem with my hp officejet d145, scanner failure.  It suggested that I turn it off and on again which I oftentimes ignore.  It didn't give me problems until recently when it didn't work anymore.

If someone knows of a solution to this somewhere, please let me know.  I will deeply appreciate your helpfulness.

    Thank you in advance.

I have had the same message and have reinstalled the software but to no avail. I have consulted the online help from HP but they have not been helpful. The machine is too OLD?

I too have had this scanner failure - turn off and back on problem for a long time. Have uninstalled and reinstalled but this problem still comes up. Am going to try the cleaning etc now - as my glass is mysteriously dirty on the underside anyway.

Hi, I had the same problem, and took it to HP service center in Midrand.

They replied and said it can not be repaired, and offer an exchange unit for R 1700!

Strange that HP chanes intoa exchange center...... can't they repair it or are they not competent to repair???

Take the top off and clean the underside of glass as well as the mirrors on the scanner. Remove the bulbs. This is a light job but not for the mechanically impaired. If you have a 7110, take the ADF off by lifting 2 black inserts near the hinges. Remove 3 screws - 2 near ADF hinges and one on the right.
- Pop off the button cover.
- Remove button assy by sliding right, lift up and pull forward. Remove cable and 2 screws in view.
- Pop off the front plastic piece that the button assy. rested on.
- Remove 1 or 2 screws on the underside center of the top glass assy.
- Open printer exposing the print area and remove the front hinges on the bottom by moving the tabs on left and right side of both hinges.
- Remove a few screws holding the top cover in place.
Cleaning the mirrors.
- Remove the top plastic cover on scanning assy by inserting a small flat blade on the left and right (just behing the lights) and release tabs. Lift front upward till rear tabs are free.
- Remove the bulb toward the middle of the scanner assy. by unplugging, unsnake wire and lift up only that end enough to clearing so you can slide the other end out.
- Remove screw holding dont the clear plasic guide.
- Unplug the other light and unsnake wire. Lift that end up only until the clear plastic piece clears guides and then slide both plastic and light until the other end of the light is free.
Clean mirrors carefully and wipe bulbs carefully
Then Reassemble.

How do I solve the "scanner failure power off and on again" message for an h.p. 6110 officjet all-in-one printer/scanner/fax?

Hi Paul,

Scanner Failure usually results in Hardware Failure. However there is one step you can try. Try connecting the printer directly to wall outlet or any other power outlet and the issue should be resolved.

Regards,
Sean

I keep getting a "Scanner Failure" error message every time I try to make a copy. I have tried all the trouble shooting the HP manual suggests but still no luck. Anyone know how to get rid of this...

This series of HP all-in-one units have a common problem that, over time, the exposure lamp. which is florescent, goes dim. The scanner looks for the right amount of light, and if it doesn't see it, it gives you the scanner failure. In some rare cases, you can dismantle and clean the mirrors and lens in the scanner, but most of the time it doesn't work.
There are no parts available for this unit.

HP 7410 All-in-One Printer A 'Scanner Failure' message is desplayed on the printer's front panel

I know i'm not going to get 4 thumbs up for providing this resolution because it seems like a hardware problem but what the heck you need some sort of help so here goes.

This error usually occurs when trying to scan or make copies. The scanner bulb is not hot enough or the electrical conditions are not suitable for the HP All-In-One product. Follow the instructions listed below to resolve this failure. The scanner lamp lighting should be viewable under the scanner glass right or left corner.
  1. c00439542.jpg 1 - Scanner lamp lighting 2 - Scanner glass If the scanner bulb does not light up, the HP All-In-One product may be defective.
  2. Make sure that the room temperature is suitable for the HP All-in-One product. Perform a Power Cycle on the unit by following the steps below:
    1. Turn the unit off.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the unit.
    3. Wait 30 seconds, and then re-connect the power cord to the unit.
    4. Turn the unit on.
    Check the power connections:
    1. Make sure that the unit is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to a power strip.Try a different wall socket.
    2. Every PC provides a standard power cord; it is possible to use it to check whether the electrical failure is prompted by the cord or not.
  3. If the Warming up or Scanner failure error messages persist, please move the unit to a different room or building to verify that the building (or room) is grounded properly.
  4. If your HP All-in-One product uses a external power module, check the power module part number against the part number listed in the User Guide to ensure the proper power module is being used. If both part numbers do not match and your product is still under warranty, please click the Contact HP link at the top of the page. If your product is out of warranty, please click the How to Buy link at the top of the page. c00458738.jpg
  5. Perform a Partial Reset by following the steps below:
    • Unplug the power cord from the HP All-in-One product.Press and hold the appropriate button combination for your HP All-in-One product. The appropriate combination for your model can be consulted in the HP All-in-One Products - Performing a Partial Reset of the All-in-One document. While still holding the buttons down, plug the power cord back in. Release the buttons after the HP All-in-One unit displays the Partial Reset message.
Make a test copy of any document. If this copy is successful, the scanner mechanism is functioning correctly. If the error appears again, Follow the below troubleshooting
Noisy scanner This failure can occur when the HP All-in-One product is initializing.Every time the unit is turned on, the scanner carriage should move. Sometimes, when the scanner carriage returns to its home position, the carriage could crash and make a loud noise.Within a few seconds, the unit gets blocked, and the front panel display shows a Scanner failure message.Scanner noise could also be caused by the scanner sensor inside the HP All-in-One product being damaged or not properly in place. To solve this failure, follow the steps below:
  1. Perform a Power Cycle on the unit by following the steps below:
    1. Turn the unit off.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the unit.
    3. Wait 30 seconds, and then re-connect the power cord to the unit.
    4. Turn the unit on.
Make a test copy of any document by pressing the Start Copy (black or color) button.
    • If this copy is successful, the scanner mechanism is functioning correctlyIf the failure remains unsolved, skip to the following step.
  2. Perform a Partial Reset on the unit by performing the following steps:
    • Unplug the power cord from the HP All-in-One unit.Press and hold the appropriate button combination for your HP All-In-One product. To know the proper combination for your model, check the HP All-in-One Products - Performing a Partial Reset of the All-in-One document. While still holding the buttons down, plug the power cord back in. Release the buttons after the HP All-In-One unit displays the Partial Reset message.
Make a test copy of any document by pressing the Start Copy (black or color) button. If this copy is successful, the scanner mechanism is functioning correctly.
  3. Now if this still doesn't resolve the issue then it's a definite hardware problem my request would be regardless of the thumbs up,call up hp at 1800-474-6836 and ask for their upgrade machines because u'll get a machine with a 50-60% discount and an extended warranty with a 70-80% discount or u may get a warranty for the next two years for $1....Sorry if I can't help you

The error message reads: "Scanner failure. Turn power off the on again." When I do that, it just gives the same error message again.

You have a bad scanner unit. Getting it repaired will cost as much as buying a new machine.

Can't find "cartridge error 50C" in my Dell owner's manual

Cartridge Error 50C
Your print cartridge has shorted.
  1. Power off your All-in-One and unplug it.
  2. Plug in your All-in-One again and turn it on.
  3. Uninstall and then reinstall your cartridges.
  4. If this does not resolve the issue, try the troubleshooting steps for the other cartridge errors below.
Cartridge Error
Complete the following instructions:
  1. Power off your All-in-One.
  2. Use both hands to lift up the scanner unit until the scanner support holds it open.
  3. Turn the All-in-One on. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.
  4. Remove the color print cartridge.
  5. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.
  6. If the error message reappears, replace the black print cartridge with a new print cartridge.
If it does not repeat steps 1-3 and then go to step 7.
  7. Reinstall the color cartridge and remove the black print cartridge.
  8. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.
  9. If the error message occurs again, replace the color cartridge.
  10. If an error message reappears, repeat steps 1-3 and reinstall both print cartridges.
  11. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.
  12. If you receive the error message again, replace both cartridges.

I keep getting a scanner failure error

Let's try this. Turn power off, unplug the cord from the surge strip or wall socket. Leave unplugged for about 30 minutes, then plug back in and turn on. Hopefully this will fix your problem. Good luck.

Won't scan nor fax

HP multi units are notorious for scanner failures. It is just a weak component in their machines. I have seen this time and time again. The only solution is to change the scanner out or purchase a different machine. Just keep in mind the notoriety HP has which failed scanners. If you want to venture into the replacement of the scanner the following website might have the product you are looking for. Otherwise, search around the net for a scanner assembly unit for the OJ7310. But, be prepared scanner units are not cheap.
