Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Oven stops after a few seconds

Like other posts, the ge JVM 1650SH01 shuts down after cooking for a few seconds. It will also work with control panel at a 45 degree angle. I tried replacing control board but that did not work. Is this the magnetron issue I keep reading about? If so, does anyone know if GE will send the consumer the parts under warranty or does it have to be from a GE service man? I do not have a problem replacing it myself. Thanks for the help. The micowave was manufactured in Jan. 2005 and I think the magnetron is still under warranty.

Having the same problem as well.  The unit first started doing this about 6 to 8 months ago.  It would do it 3 or 4 times a week, but we could always reset it and it would work for a while.  It had been working fine until last week. Now the problem reappeared, but this time we cannot get it to work.  After we reset it, it just shuts off again after 2 seconds.

I called GE and of course they were useless.  I told them how many instances of this same problem I was able to find online but they still insisted that there is nothing they can do.  They want to send a service tech out to diagnose at a rate of $100.  Then if I elect to do whatever repair is deemed necessary the diagnosis fee would be waived, but I would then have to pay whatever labor cost was involved in replacing the part.  I told them that the magnetron is obviously to blame and in light of the numerous defective units reported that I want the part replaced without incurring the labor charge.  They would not agree.  I explained that this was absolutely horrible customer relations.  They know that this part is prone to premature failure yet they still insist on sticking the customer for the cost of the repair.

I have the contact address for the senior management of GE Consumer Relations:  AP6 Mailroom 129, Louisville KY 40225,  attn:  Raymond Graft

I'll be sending him a letter letting him know my dissatisfaction and demanding a refund of the cost of the product.  I'll post back what happens.

I like the information you give.
If the unit will work with the control Panel at a 45 degree angle it tells me you have a loose connection. The 45 degree angle puts enough pressure on the connection to keep it completed. With the Control Panel in it's normal position, the loose connection Heats and Opens the connection. After it cools connection is again made until it Heats up again. Remember Expansion, Contraction. I do not believe you have a Magnetron issue!! A Magnetron does not know if the Control Panel is at an angle.
Can you hear a slight "Click" when the unit shuts down? If so this is a relay opening. When you say you replaced the Control Board. Was this the Control Panel PC Board, or was it the Cook-Relay Control Board? A Door Switch not making solid contact can do this. Is your Door latching down solid? Check for loose connections, not open LOOSE.

GE spacemaker microwave turns off during cooking and display goes black

Step 1:

Door Switch

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and then shuts off, a door switch might have failed intermittently. Check each of the door switches for any signs of overheating, arcing, or burning. Also check each of them for continuity. Replace any of the switches that is visibly damaged or that only has continuity intermittently

Step 2:

Main Control Board

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops there may be a short circuit in the main control board. Check other components first, these boards are often misdiagnosed.

Touchpad and Control Panel

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad and control panel might be defective. There are several other components that can cause this problem, be sure to check any other components before replacing this board.

Touchpad

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad might be at fault. This is not common. Generally speaking, if the microwave display is working and some of the buttons respond correctly but some don't, the problem is with the touchpad.

High Voltage Transformer

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the high voltage transformer might have an intermittent short. This is not common. Check other components related to the microwave symptom first.

Thermostat

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the thermostat might be defective. Watch our video on testing thermostat

Turntable and cooking power not working, everything else does.

You have a shorting membrane keypad.

If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running unattended.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit) for a free estimate and free tips & do-it-yourself advice.

No power to GE Spacemaker Microwave

I have model GE Microwave serial # JVM2070SK02. I start to cook something and it shuts off 5~10 seconds. Keyboard is still lit up, but no clock, fan, light and you cannot operate anything on the key pad. Unplug the unit and it resets. Sometimes it cooks, sometimes it doesn't? It is getting more frequent with the shutting down problem?

My ge microwave after running for about 3 to 4 minute it shuts down and will not start up again for 30 minutes model # TH903659B JVM 1650 JVM 1651 what is the problem thanks

If the fan comes on when you put the unit into a cook cycle and all sounds normal otherwise, you most likely have a bad magnetron tube. (Google "GE magnetron failure" and watch how many complaints and articles pop up). The tube overheats and trips the thermal relay causing the unit to shut off until it cools back down and comes on.
Very, very common problem on these models although GE will not admit it.

Same problem- microwave shuts off

You have a bad magnetron. The fact that it works when the board is tilted is the giveaway.

Microwave shuts off after a few seconds

Nov 22, 2007. I also had the 3 second shut off problem with my G/E 1650 MWO. Read all the above and tried them all. Finally I just took a 8" x 8" piece of Reynolds Wrap Aluminum foil and but it in an zip lock bag and placed it behind the control panel. It's been working for 2 weeks now. Just take out the 2 screws that hold the vent across the front right above the door. Next on the right side is one screw, take it out and then gently lift the control panel (panel with the buttons) about 1/2" and it will fold out and stay there. put the zip lock bag inside. Close it back up. I'd test it before replacing all the screws. You don't need to un-plug anything. Just don't stick your fingers on all the exposed parts...Mine works great now and didn't cost $0.10.
