The washer has worked for years and we have done nothing to
alter the loading, etc. Now, I have usually had to double spin my loads
anyway to get enough water out for my satisfaction, however, the
clothes are very damp (wet?) now after only one spin. Even after
multiple spins they are more wet than they used to be after the regular
wash cycle finish spin. I would rather fix this myself if poss, but have no manual.

Make sure the washer sits level on the floor and that the machine can't be rocked around due to uneven foot adjustment. The feet usually have rubber cups that cover the metal bottoms--one of the cups may be damaged or missing entirely. Hope this helps!
I'm not a repair professional. I am just a 78 year man who has done his own washer repair for about 50 years. You might have a bad lid switch that keeps the washer from spinning. You might have an unbalanced load in the machine which makes the noise. The unbalanced load might also be the cause of not spinning.
My Maytag® Neptune® washer filled with water, but it won't spin or drain-what now?
Start by making sure the machine is plugged into a live (working)
electrical outlet. Then check the appropriate circuit breaker and reset
it if necessary (or check the fuse if you have a fuse box).
Next, inspect the drain hoses and remove any kinks. Take a look at the
drain, too - if it's clogged, call your usual drain service person.
Then close the washer door and firmly press the START/STOP button. In a
few moments, after the door locks, the washer should begin to spin.
(For your safety, the washer will not tumble or spin unless the door is
closed and locked.)
