    Hi Anne,

    I am assuming that by "have to go back to the modem

    " you are referring to the modem issued by Talktalk that connects your ISP/Internet through the telephone line. Further, this modem is connected to your laptop using Ethernet cable (networking). Pls confirm.
    If yes:
    1. Can you pls post back with details/specs of your modem. Normally they are underneath the modem printed on a sticker or name plate;
    2. Can you pls connect to the Internet by using this modem and determine the network configurations. This is done by going to Start, Run, type "CMD" (w/o the quotes), on the next black window type "IPCONFIG /ALL" (w/o the quotes), you need to get the info (of your Ethernet Adapter) on IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS Server(s);
    3. Was their a CD that came with this modem? and
    4. Do you still have the CD that came with the NetGear?
    Pls post back.

    If no:
    a. Can you pls detail how Talktalk Internet service goes in to your laptop.

    Good luck and kind regards.

Setting up a wireless lan

The DG834PN is an easy to set-up, single box solution, it plugs straight into your ADSL line – there is no need for a separate modem. Once the DG834PN modem router is connected, configuration is also easy, via NETGEAR’s Smart Wizard™. The Smart Wizard™ automatically detects your ISP’s network settings, and then walks you through each step of the installation process. Or then Call ur ISP.

Connection with netgear to laptop

Helen, you should be able to connect from your laptop to your router wirelessly. From what I understood your router is hooked up to your PC directly. If that's the case from your PC connect to your router and enable wireless. Go to Netgear support web page to find out how to do it. Once enabled, you should see your router's name in the list of available wireless networks on your laptop

Laptop finding router but no internet connection

If you can connect directly to your virgin Media Broadband and get internet then your laptop and broadband router is fine.

The wireless router appears not to have a DNS entry and you will need to add that manually.

I suggest that you connect directly to the Broadband modem, be sure you can get onto the internet. Once you have confirmed you can get onto the internet you need to get the dns information from your Broadband modem for later.

once connected directly to the broadband modem, click start>run> then type "CMD" then click open. you will get a prompt type the following and record the DNS Server ip addresses.

"ipconfig /all" then hit enter
this will display your ipaddress information but mostly you need the DNS server ip addresses.

once you have recorded them rerun the install, but this time instead of at the end of the install where it shows the Wireless router information you can modify or change it and add the DNS server entries.

Also by default most wireless routers ip address is and you can type that from a internet explorer and change it from there as well. I believe it's no ID or user name and the password is admin.

Good luck
