Have a problem with my parallel port...please help

I have a software key for a cad/cam program that plugs into the parallel port, but every time try and start the program, it tells me it cant find the key. I know you can change the settings for the port in the startup settings, but I dont know which one it is and there are quite a few options. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

thanks, courtney

    What are the three options?

  • skypirate Jan 27, 2008

under the mode ECP, there are more options. One says " I/O Address " and the other has " DMA Channel "

    the options to pick for "I/O" are " 378h, 278h, or 3BCH "
the options to pick for "DMA" are " off, DMA 1, or DMA 3 "

what do i put for those rows?

i wasnt able to get it to work, but thanks anyway

Enter the bios at startup , F2
go to the section on the integrated peripherals
you may have to change the ports settings to one of 3 choices.

In the BIOS for the PC, change LPT port type from EPP to ECP, Enhanced, or Standard.

It is likely set on epp now and the dongle needs standard.

for the setting of ecp its usually 378 and dma 1
but try the standard setting first.

I was reading up on some cad dongles,
most say to use ECP dma3 or Dma1
the other fix was that some onboard lpt ports only have 3 volt output instead of 5.
Thus requiring an external printer card.
When I worked at Dell we did have some reports of this .
I have dongles on several of my dell's and 1/3 of them are using a pci parallell card, mainly because I was running out of ports.
So I may have accidentally fixed an issue

My computer cannot detect my scanner. Error Code: 0x0070800

The FB320P is a parallel port scanner and is having problems communicating with the computer. Are you connecting it directly to the parallel port on the computer? In that case, you may not have bi-directional communication enabled. Turn off the scanner and the computer and disconnect the data cable from the computer. Turn on the computer and enter the BIOS. (Press Esc, F1, F10, or Del repeatedly after you turn the computer. You should see a screen with the correct key to press; it varies depending on your BIOS and motherboard. If you miss the timing, shut down the computer and try again.) In the BIOS, search for the parallel port settings and see if you can enable bi-directional communication.

Not all parallel ports support bi-directional communication. If you can't enable the feature, you need a different parallel port. Try a PCI slot add-on card; just check the features and check the manual for enabling bi-directional communication.

If you are using a USB to parallel port adapter, get a different one that supports the bi-directional communication.

What OS are you using? There are a few that had ASPI driver issues; a third party app, ForceASPI, may help. See http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cd_dvd/dvd_tools/frcaspi.cfm for information.

I hope this helps. Please add more information about the configuration (cable, OS, etc) for extra ideas to solve the problem.

Sir, i am learning embedded programming, i want to dump the program in the micro-controller through parallel port but there is no parallel port in my system. 1) if i buy usb to parallel port is it work as...

It would be better to use the USB to do this since Parallel ports are almost obsolete in today's computers. If you have an open expansion port you could put a parallel port card in the computer no problem but why would you want to? I would have to have a much better understanding of what you where trying to do to give you any other advice about Parallel vs USB vs FireWire. I have seen app's that use the serial port and parallel port as you are mentioning but these are tools for doing dead PC diagnostics and even most of those use the serial port because of the improves Bidirectional abilities for data flow.
