Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

Garmin 660 wont operate on power lead

I recently purchased a Garmin 660 s/h and it only operates on the battery.

When connected to an external source (car, mains, computer) the Garmin screen comes up and "loading maps" but then it switches to a screen that shows GARMIN plus the picture of a Sat Nav connected to a computer.

Can you please advice.

Re: Garmin 660 wont operate on power lead

Are you using the Garmin AC adapter or the Garmin car adapter? Using the wrong cable and the Garmin will think that you are trying to connect to a computer. Not all USB cable are alike.

When connected to your computer it thinks that you want to upload or donwload information.

I have a garmin gps nuvi 255w and I wanted to register it, but a massage keeps on poping up saying external power lost shuting in 29 seconds. What should I do?

Try to charge your nuvi properly and full, or for at least 2hours before registering it. If the source of power connected to your nuvi is not strong enough, the nuvi might go off during an operation. Secure that the battery is well charged, then the source supplying the power is good enough to supply your nuvi with power before starting an operation.
Hope this helps.

The unit runs Ok for a few minutes and then shuts down.

Does it do this on just battery power or with an external power source? If on battery poer, then the battery if defective.

My Garmin Nuvi 660 device has no power.

yes it has a built in battery, the battery is not owner servicable, and that could be your problem, the battery life is around 2 years, u will need to send the unit into Garmin for an exchange GPS, to get more details the exchange program go to, register your GPS and then select support option, u vcan also call them.

Corrupted the software

It depends on how the files were corrupted. If the source of the corruption is not physical or magnetic damage to the memory chip where the software is stored, you should be able to reinstall the operating system software and the new maps right from your own PC.

First I would recommend going to the Nuvi 660 page in the Garmin website, look for the link to "downloads and updates", and download the most recent software update. The update is free.

Once you have done that, try reinstalling your maps. You can only load Garmin maps into your Nuvi.

If you are in the US and your memory storage is not damaged, I can update your GPS and install the map for you if you prefer.

Garmin Nuvi shuts itself off after only seconds during navigation

Is the battery charged? What does the battery indicator say? If you are using it in the car, is the power cord connected and working properly? If it is working correctly, you should see a lightning bolt symbol over the battery bar graph showing that it is connected to an external power source and that it is charging.

Map fro Garmin

As far as I know you can only buy maps from Garmin, or a Garmin retailer.  The 660 should have all the maps for North America already loaded in it.

You can purchase Points of Interest (POI) databases from a variety of sources.  Just google POI.  These are not maps but they are adresses for points of interest such as restaurants, special services, and even speed trap cameras.
