Question about Acer Extensa 4620 Notebook
My manual gives no info on how to use the webcam! How can I record video clips of myself to email? And how do I videochat with someone else using their webcam over the internet?
The webcam application is in the Windows Program Files (X86) folder. You can perform a search for part of the folder that contains the application using the Search window while in Windows Explorer under your C drive. Enter "Acer Crystal Eye" (without the quotes) and it should bring you to the folder with all the application files.
Now once in the Acer Crystal Eye Webcam folder, look for the file that has an icon that is a Circle with a bright blue center. (It's intended to look somewhat like and eyeball with a blue iris. Use your imagination.) This is the Executable file that will activate the web cam, assuming you have it all installed correctly. To simplify running this app, I use a shortcut placed on the desktop created by right clicking the above-described icon and then from the drop-down menu select "create shortcut". You will probably get a msg saying you can't create the shortcut within this folder (which is fine). Take the indicated option to crate the shortcut on your desktop. Once you have that shortcut on the desktop you simply double click it and after a few moments the Crystal Eye Webcam will present a screen that shows whatever the camera is looking at. There are icons (self explanatory) at the bottom of that screen that you would use to take a picture or a movie.
You did not mention what your operating system is or whether or not you have updated to Win7. The Acer Extensa 5420 came out prior to the release of 64 bit Win 7. This laptop can run win7 in either 32 bit or 64 bit mode. But CAUTION, if you update the OS to 64 bit Win7 from anything else it came with you will probably find that the Webcam will no longer function! I have a simple solution for you in this case.
Believe it or not I've been trying to get my webcam up again on my ACER 5420 for over a year after I upgraded to 64bit Win7. I've visited the ACER support site to look for drivers and updated apps and you will NOT find them anywhere on Acer's site for this computer. But, I've just succeeded in using the drivers and software intended for the Acer Mini laptop model A0756-2420. So, if you have this issue, I suggest you "trick" Acer into giving you this software by downloading it from their site by indicating that you have a more recent ACER laptop like the A0756-2420 that has the webcam and is already running Win7 in 64 bit mode. It works just FINE.

From stinking Windows Hel and Support for Windows Movie Maker: "Why am I unable
to import video from my web camera or analog video source?
Import Video does not support importing video from a web camera or analog video source such as a VCR. To use video from your web camera, you can use the software that comes with the camera to record the video to your computer."
