Question about Dell Inspiron 8500 Notebook

1 Answer

Ethernet controller, Multemedia controller, PCI Modem and Video controller dont work since i've installed home edition

I recently updated my laptop from XP to XP Home edition. But when i turnde on my computer there's no sound. I tried to connect to the internet to download the latest drivers but i couldn't connect at all. I then looked at my device manager and the following things are yellow with a big explanation/question mark next to them:
1. Ethernet Controller
2. Multimedia Audio controller
3. PCI Modem
4. Video controller (VGA Compatible)

I'm guessing that since i installed home edition its updated all the drivers for everything except the hardware listed above. I have tried repairs using the XP Disk but with no success. If anyone knows what to do or the exact links to update these drivers it would be greatly appreciated. (I am posting this of my other pc)

    Try this link:

    http://support.dell.com/support/download...=

This should get you to the Dell site where the drivers for your laptop are available. Here's the problem you're going to run into...there are multiple drivers available in many category. Unless you know what hardware is actually in your computer you'll just have to try them all until you find the correct one. If you look at the "Importance" column when you select a specific type of hardware on the page I've given you, you can save your self a great deal of time by only downloading the Urgent and Recommended drivers.

When you download and attempt to install the incorrect driver you will not do any harm, it will simply tell you it's not the correct driver.

Last piece of advice. Download all the ethernet drivers first. Either put them on a USB drive or burn a CD. Once you get the ethernet controller working on the laptop you can download the rest of the drivers directly to your laptop.

    Good luck.

I will try. First, upgrade xp to xphome? I think XP home is not an upgrade from anything except maybe Win Me or 9x. As far as I understand it, XP home is the lowest flavor of Win that is currently being supported. That being said, Heres my idea.

I don't know the type of lap you have so I cant look for it myself but if you go to your manufactures web site you should be able to find updated drivers for your Laptop. Usually it can be found under the heading "support" or "downloads". They will ask for your model # and then provide you with a list of drivers and such. If you include your Make and Model# I can help further. But I bet you just the need to update the drivers.

Yes- you need to go to Toshiba's website and download the drivers for your unit. The drivers for all of this hardware should be listed there for your model.

Ethernet controller drivers not installed.

you need to download the correct drivers for these components from the manufacturer's website.

If you go the manufacturer's website and go to the download page, usually you can specify the model of your system, which should bring you a list of the drivers and software for your system

as you have not included manufacturer or model of your laptop I cannot direct you any more than this
