Can't print onto 4x6 photo paper

My photosmart D5160 wont print onto 4 x 6 photo paper. The tray feeds in but then comes straight back out saying that it is empty, despite the fact that it is not.
I make sure that there is no paper in the main tray but it makes no difference.
Everything else on this printer is fine so what's going wrong????

Re: Can't print onto 4x6 photo paper

I just tried to post what i did to solve this but it doesn't look like it took

now you know how to feed the paper with the perforated edge facing you and the shiny side down, if you take the edge opposite of the perforated edge (pretty much the edge of the paper that you stick into the printer) you just curl that up, i just curled it up about the width of my thumb, i would play around with that.

It might help to understand if you take the back off the printer and get a flash light and try to print a photo, you will see the paper tray slide in and see it feed.

hope this helps

Re: Can't print onto 4x6 photo paper

My photosmart 7280 was having the same problem - it turns out that a the paper was catching when it was trying to feed and after one or two tries to feed a sheet - it would back the tray out and ask me to load more paper.
I removed the duplexing attachment and watched it try to print - I could see that the the paper was catching on a narrow metal paper stop at the back of the photo paper tray. This stop is indended to ensure you don't push the paper in too far when loading the tray.  I took a long screwdriver and bent it back and down slightly:

From this:  ________|          To this:       _________/

Hope this helps - it was sure driving me crazy!

Re: Can't print onto 4x6 photo paper

Did you try this from HP.
I also suggest you remove the back door & clean the wheels with a clean no lint water dampend rag. Replace the door.

You also need to change the paper type in printing preferences. You will find 4x6 and 4x6 with tab in th pull down menu where it says plain paper. Be sure to position the paper as far as it will go into the printer and close the paper controls to hold it there. Also fan it well before you put it in.

Smaller items will only feed crookedly into the printer document

Check to see if you are feeding the envelopes and 4x6 cards/photo paper correctly.

Both envelopes and 4x6 cards must be loaded and centered on the paper exit tray (not inside the paper input tray).

Printing envelopes:
  • Up to 15 envelopes can be loaded at a time.
  • The print side of the envelope faces down.
  • The envelopesare centered on the paper exit tray.
  • You print the envelopes with Landscape orientation.
Printing cards:
  • Up to 35 greeting cards, index cards, postcards, or photo cardscan be loaded at a time.
  • The print side of the cards faces down.
  • The cards are centered on the paper exit tray.
  • You select Automatic, Normal, or Photo print quality.

HP Photosmart 3210xi All in one printer will not print 4x6 photos

Have you processed many print jobs through this printer? if so, you might be needed a maintenance kit. the kit will include new rollers that will help pull the paper into the proper feed paths.

Will not go to photo tray to print 4X6 picture

This is why Mac's are EVIL!!!! LOL, anyway try using the software, that comes with the printer, and tell it which paper type, and tray to use. Also try printing on a PC, and see if it works then, as you may have to live with this as the solution.

You have to push in the photo tray~. Push until you hear it click...then it will print from the print tray and in turn, you will be able to print photos unto your glossy photo paper instead of the letter size paper.
