Proton PD-800 DVD player Region reset

ANy idea how to 'reset' the region code for this DVD player? Apparently this device has a habit of 'forgetting' what region it is in and then presenting a 'wrong disk' error when trying to play a region encoded DVD. (works fine with region free DVDs....)

Most sets have a series of buttons on the remote that can be pushed to 'reset' the player to its default 'I'm ready to decide where I am' mode, but what is it for this device?

Thanks!

'setup' simply presents the menus used to configure the player for NTSC/PAL etc. The only buttons marked plus and minus are for the volume control, and those do nothing in the setup screens. Is there a way to enter the 'service mode' that I'm missing? I assume that is where you need to be to begin this process. How do I get THERE? ... thanks!

My Protron dvd player worked fine with all non-North American regional code dvds . Once I started using it to play North American region code dvds then it began giving me the "wrong region code" error message for the dvds I played in the past such as from UK or Japan? I too went through all the buttons on the remote and can't seem to find what could be needing resetting? I tried calling Protron's help number but get a message that the number can't be reached from my dialing area.?

    lcarneva, --
Actually what you describe is 'normal' operation. Once a player has been presented with several discs of a specific region (eg Europe or Asia) it will no longer play those from other regions (like North America)

I still haven't found anyone who can get this into 'setup' mode so that 'preference' can be defeated. It is usually set in either an EPROM or some other non-volitle memory device, so simply disconnecting from power won't do the trick ....

Is there ANYONE out there who knows Protons codes? Thanks //cheapz

Guest -- my unit has been unplugged since January 08, I think we're talking about different issues. If you 'mistakenly' set something like PAL instead of NTSC your 'picture' won't work, and unplugging it may get ti to 'forget' that setting, but this 'region coding' is something done in firmware. Just for giggles I plugged it back in and, indeed, it still doesn't work -- still 'wrong disc' error.

Still works flawlessly with no region discs and audio CDs -- anyone want to buy a CD player real cheap? :)

After working on it cleaning etc.., resetting features and searching for a manual, I finally found the orginal manual. Sounds stupid, but the solution is to unplug the unit for a few minutes. The processor needs time to reset.

Picture will resume to default settings.

Without disk in player click setup, then hit + and - over and over until the code shows up on your screen. I don't know which code will work, you may have to experiment.

Invlaid region code

Sounds like you are trying to play a DVD of a different region to that of the player.

Worldwide region codes, sumarised:

1 - US / Canada

2 - Europe

3 - Asia

4 - Australia

5 - Africa

6 - China

You can change the region code of the DVDR520H to any region or use region 0, which makes the unit multi-region to play DVDs from any region.

  1. Go into the main menu
  2. Highlight the exit button
  3. Type 2960

This should give you access to a hidden menu form where you can change the region code.

Hp dvd player

This problem can often be caused by the DVD player software thinking it is in a region different than your discs. (DVD discs are often encoded with 'region codes' meaning a disc purchased in Asia will not work in a player expecting to see North American discs)

What can happen is the player 'forgets' where it is, and your regioned discs won't play any longer (region free discs should continue to work as will audio CDs ....)

A power surge, random cosmic ray or similar flakiness can cause a player to 'forget' what region it was designed for ....

If that is what has happened you need to 'reset' the region code.

Altho I can diagnose this, I have NO CLUE as to how to do this with a hp DVD player. Anyone out there know how to reset the region codes for this (or generically for a DVD player?)

Thanks!! //cheapz
