We bought (don't yell at me!) an Emachine used and it has id E210882 on the motherbd. I am reading from various sites that that is NOT the identity of the motherboard. So how do I find out exactly what the motherbd is? I want to add memory and would like to know what it will take

You really should contact Emachine support. I looked for your model # 5250 among all their various model ' series ' with no luck on my end. I also thoroughly investigated the Intel website for your motherboard model # and that doesn't show up either at least not as written by you. I did find on the Japanese Intel website a model that was very similar tho. It is written as D915GAV, not GVA and the website for reference is very hard to read by most West Europeans and Americans. So my strongest recommendation is to go with the first link to Emachine support. I'm sure they can be of some help to you.
just you can visit the intel website you will get the drivers ...
you will not get the latest drivers for this series motherboards like 845gl,845gv,845gvsr etc as these are a bit old models of the motherboards ... but still you will get the drivers updated than the drivers present in the manufacture cd ..... here is the link you can choose the version of your motherboard & you can download:
you can not make it, please see this document. http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/so/so_proc.htm or see this is very instructive. http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/475688-upgrade-processor-dell-board-e210882-2.html Thanks Sergio
