When I connect the charger I either get "Unable to charge battery" or "Insert SIM" - the SIM is already inserted. Battery is new. what's the problem

It sounds like you may have 2 issues that need repairing:

Bad charging port
Bad SIM tray.

Since you can get V3's on ebay now for under $40, that might be your cheaper option.

Phone won't charge or hold a charge - tried 3 different chargers and a new battery. Cleaned all connection points with alcohol. LG Vue

The problem with the phone is the charging port since you have use different charger and you have even change the battery and yet not still charging. it means the charging port of your phone is the problem.

All you need to do i to replace the charging port on your phone and you will see that your phone will charge.

Replace the charging port on your phone and your phone will start to charge, just change the charging and the problem is solved.

Take care.

Overheating of razor phone

the v3 is known for battery issues. not charging, not holding charge and overheating. my suggesting is get a different model phone. and stay away from razors. they all have battery issues, I know this from multiple customer razor issues. all battery issues.
