My 12 year old Sony KP-53V80 TV suddenly turned off and will not show a picture just a small rainbow at the top of the screen, then a whistling sound, crack and turns back off. can you help?

sounds like the inverter went bad...There's a high voltage device in there that runs the whole "picture" thing. There are capacitors involved with it that have probably failed leading to this mess.. That would be what that "crack" is...If you try to turn it back on does it just "click " and then stay off?

It is showing a double picture

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Sony rear projector TV problem, KP-61v35

This is a problem with the vertical circuit. This can be as simple as poor connections at the vertical IC or a defective IC. If you can solder, you should be able to fix this yourself. Let me know if you wish to attempt the repair and I will supply additional details and instructions.

I have a Sony Projection TV KP-53v80. I tried to turn it on today bu there is no picture no sound. The Timer/Standby indicator flashes 4 times. What does this mean?

No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted.

Sony big screen tv model# kp-53v80

It can be just an adjustment of your screen control. There is a "sweet spot" on the control where it allows the picture to come through. This is a common problem with sets that are getting old. If there is a problem with the high voltage from the color tubes then it will shut down the video until the problem is gone and it is safe again to show the picture. This is known as going into a shutdown procedure to protect the set. A technician will be needed to fix your problem since it will require proper troubleshooting and knowledge of high voltage system and safety procedures.

Sony kp-53v80

Heres how you get into the service menu. BUT be very careful write down anything that you change as this can screw your set up and if you write down everything you will be able to change it back if it affects your set. You may want to consider getting the service manual which will explain all the details on the convergence adjustments. If so let me know and I will post a link where you can get one along with free tech support to help you out with it.
Put the TV in Standby Mode.
  • Then press the following buttons on the remote:

    {DISPLAY} {5} {VOL+} {POWER}
    or
    {DISPLAY} {5} {POWER}
    or
    {DISPLAY} {5} {PICTURE} {POWER}
    or
    {DISPLAY} {5} {VOL+} {PICTURE} {POWER}

  • The TV will turn on with the Service Menu displayed.

  • Use numbers {1} and {4} to select the item to adjust.
  • Use numbers {3} and {6} to adjust the value of the data.
  • Press {MUTE} then {ENTER} to save new settings.
  • The words "WRITE" in red will show up in the upper right corner if saved.
  • Turn the TV off to exit the service menu.

    Lines in picture

    You may have to re-adjust the screen drive. It sounds as though it may be just a bit high. If it's not that, you may be getting a bad picture tube. I hope this has helped in some way.
