Question about Acer Aspire 1640Z Notebook

1 Answer

Monitor My monitor will go fuzzy and lock up, then go blank. If I move the monitor it may or may not resolve the problem temporarily. I am assuming there is a connection problem, but have no clue on how I can fix it.

Re: Monitor

Try tapping the keyboard when it does it, the connector is under the keyboard, if that works then the keyboard end o the connector is loose, i it changes when touching the screen the connector at that end could be loose, have you dropped it?

I connected an external monitor to a lap top. The screen on the monitor is bouncing making all the print fuzzy and difficult to read.

Have you tried the same connection with another monitor? That will tell you if the cable or monitor is the problem. If the same thing happens with another monitor then its the computer input or system drivers.

Monitor suddenly went black. Whn restarted, the monitor came on for about 3 seconds, then went black again.

This may be shot in the dark...since you may have already thought of it...

Could it be that you've accidentally hit some keystrokes that placed your monitor into the mode for viewing it on an outside source such as a tv?

On my Dell Inspiron 1524 laptop, if I press the FN and F8 (CRT/TV) keys, it temporarily disables my monitor since it assumes that I have a TV connected. Since you didn't list the Make and Model of your laptop, it may be on a different key. The FN key initiates a special function when it's pressed with the appropriate key. If you press the combination again, it should eventually allow you to see your monitor again.

I hope that will solve your problem. If it doesn't you may wish to write again.

Wont start up no picture

Assuming it powers but just has no display, you might wanna try attaching an external monitor just temporarily. Then use the keyboard shortcuts (usually and Fn key plus a Function key) to switch to the monitor. This will tell you if the problem lies in the graphics chipset or purely the display itself. Displays can be replaced although not usually cheaply, but if the graphics chipset is the fault your looking at a new motherboard and you're better off buying a new laptop. If you are able to display on an external monitor then even if the LCD is shot you may at least be able to use the machine or recover data.

I have used 15 point vga to connect laptop to my tv so can use tv screen as a monitor, tv screen just stays blank. how do i switch to external monitor?

Look at your functions keys. most common is F3 but sometimes another key, it will have a little monitor on it, or two screens with a slash.
Press your function (fn) button and this key, it should toggle between Laptop monitor, External, both.
(this is assuming you want to clone your monitor, which is what you described).

Blank Screen

First, confirm that it is the screen itself. Connect the video output to a known working monitor and then power on your Thinkpad. if the known working monitor behaves the same way you can rule out the laptop's monitor as the source of the problem. This may be the BGA, Ball Grid Assembly, leadless soldering problem related to video chips on the motherboard, but first test the monitors.

Blank screen

If your LCD is on but blank then it means its not compatible with the picture being send from the CPU VGA unless its faulty itself.

  1. Try reducing your Computer display setting to those specified as native or default setting of your monitor. Offcoz to do this you ned another monitor preferably external. Boot up your machine with an external monitor connected if it lights up the external monitor then go to your desktop (if using windows) right click select properties and goto settings and reduce the VGA card setting to those of your LCD or just lower settings. and then restart your computer without the extrernal monitor.
  2. If it does lughts up your External monitor but does not light up your LCD on rebooting then its possibly that your video cable to the LCD is broken and needs replacement or that your assuming you saying that it powers up
  3. If it fails to light up the external monitor as well then if means your VGA card is not working (assuming you used modern CRT monitor to test it). If its up to the third option you need to replace your VGA card assuming its not onboard for a laptop. If its onboard please check if your machine is working or running properly when your machine is not diplaying like making windows welcome sounds etc cause it might be just your RAM that needs replacement
P.S. Try to give more details when you ask to make your questions easier to answer and answers more helpful
