On-off switch on vacuum cleaner does not work

I have a Hoover slf propelled windtunnel vaccum cleaner with bag. A few days ago it sucked some toy part and started giving out smoke and burnt smell. also the on-off switch would not work. I opened it and checked the bands, but they seem to be fine. But still the switch does not work. It remains on even when in 'off' position, unless I pull out the plug. Please advise.

Re: On-off switch on vacuum cleaner does not work

These machines had a defective switch and a bulletin was sent out to all service depots. If you contact any Hoover Warranty Depot, they will replace the switch, wiring harness and tool receiver under a no-charge warranty. It doesn't matter how old it is, but it must be listed in the serial number listing as one of the defective machines. It is possible that the switch just failed, as any switch can, and that your machine is not one of the affected models of the early switch, which means that they would charge for the repair work. You can go to and check the serial number to see if your's is one of the defective ones. Other wise, you can buy a switch and install it yourself or have a repair shop do it.
As far as the toy part, your flat rubber belt will need to be replaced because, even though it looks fine, it will have sustained damage from the toy part jamming the brush roll. This belt should be change yearly anyway.

Please click here to see the part diagram for the Hoover Windtunnel Self Propelled model U6446-900

Greetings from GoVacuum,

For replacing the switch, you need to remove the 2 screws that are in the back of the vacuum where the handle connects to the vacuum bag housing, Part # 50 on the first page of the diagram. After the screws have been removed, you may simply slide out the handle from the rest of the vacuum cleaner. You can then at this point view the outside of the switch, however as you'll find you can't replace it from this side. You'll then need to go into the where the tool caddy is in the front top part of the vacuum cleaner. Remove the attachments from the tool caddy, and then you'll need to remove the screws that hold the tool casing in place. Remove screws pictured # 35 on page 1, and the tool caddy is item # 17.

Once the screws and the tool caddy are removed, you may then see the rest of the switch, and the leads that connect to it. The easiest way to remove the screw is to use a flat head screwdriver and pry the switch out from the back of the vacuum cleaner after removing the leads from the switch. The new switch that you'll need to purchase is Hoover part number 28161067 which can be found online here: Hoover Windtunnel Main On / Off Switch Part Number 28161067.

I hope that this helps you replace the faulty switch in yours (and your parents) vacuum cleaners. If you need to place an order for the switch, please give us a call at 1-866-468-2288.

Thank you,
Chris Jones

Hoover windtunnel self-propelled - will not turn on

You probably need the switch replaced. It's fairly simple to do youself, and it is a known problem with these vacuums.
You can order the switch from hoover for about $10

The carpet / floor switch is a mechanical assembly. the bottom cover needs to be removed to expose the screws for the hood cover to be removed. then the switch can be accessed for repair

Hoover Recalls Self-Propelled Vacuum Cleaners
Consumer Complaints
Hoover Company Inc. has agreed to pay a $750,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that it failed to report to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) the sale of vacuum cleaners with defective on-off switches that can overheat and cause the vacuum cleaner to catch fire.
In April 2005, Hoover conducted a recall of 636,000 Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners because of defective on-off switches.
In June 2004, after CPSC received notice of several vacuum cleaner incidents, the Commission staff requested Hoover provide a full report of incident information. In July 2004, when Hoover submitted a full report, it had notice of 260 consumer incidents, of which 141 involved reports of fire. Additionally, there was one report of a minor burn injury.
Hoover first learned of a vacuum cleaner switch on one of these units overheating and melting in April 1999.
Federal law requires firms to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that a product contains a defect which could create a substantial risk of injury to the public, presents an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or violates a federal safety standard.
These Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners are plastic, upright vacuums with the brand name Hoover and words "Self Propelled" printed on the front of the product.
Only those Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners manufactured between May 1998 and November 1999 are included in the recall that is the subject of this penalty.

Self Propel doesn't work! where does the cable attach from handle? How do u do it?

if you haven't already gotten this fixed, simply remove the two screws on the bottom of the handle. Inside is the cable; please make sure to unplug your vaccum first.
