My Elna 6000: the needle does not want to move forward or backwards

The needle never moves forward/back on its own for most sewing machines. The needle bar goes up and down. The fabric moves due to the action of the feed dogs. First remove the fabric from under the presser foot. Check for tangled thread wrapped around the feed dogs or fabric/thread going down into the bobbin area in a tangle. Next check if the feed dogs are up. (When the feed dogs are down or covered (on some machines), the machine is in darning mode. The fabric will only move if you move it yourself.) With the fabric out of the way, rotate the hand wheel and check if the feed dogs are moving. Open up the bobbin compartment and clean out any lint, thread or other debris that may be tangling the mechanism. Take off the throat plate and check the feed dogs. A damaged throat plate can stop the feed dogs from moving properly. You may need to replace the throat plate.

For some machines, you may need to make sure that the unit is not in bobbin wind mode. This is usually obvious since the needle bar won't move either.

I hope this helps.

My feed dogs will not pull my material through.

Check to be sure you have not inadvertently dropped the feed dogs on your machine. Dropped feed dogs are used for 'darning' or 'free motion quilting.' Below is info from Troubleshooting Manual:

Fabric does not feed through the machine
The feed dogs are lowered. Use the feed dog position switch to raise the feed dogs. 81
The stitches are too close together. Lengthen the stitch length. 42
The wrong presser foot was used. Attach the correct presser foot. 179
The needle is bent or blunt. Replace the needle with a new one. 34
The thread is tangled. Use scissors, etc., to cut the tangled thread and remove it from the race, etc.

Will only make very small stitches even when set on 4.

With no make or model, it's guessing. First remove throat plate under presser foot that needle passes through, check for lint on feed dogs and in between feed dog teeth. Next l would oil feed dog mechanism, turn hand-wheel with throat plate removed and look for parts that rub. Lubricate with sew machine oil. Hope it helps.

Feed dogs not pushing fabric through

Remove the needle plate and make sure there is no lint obstructing the feed dogs. If they are clear, it is usually the feed dog step motor gone bad. You should have your machine serviced by an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer. You can find your nearest dealer at the Husqvarna Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us

How do sew a straight line on a viking 6360?

You may need to service the machine. One thing to check is the feed teeth are at least 1mm above the needle plate on the highest setting. You can remove the needle plate and check if there is lint keeping the teeth from rising. The upper right knob controls the stitch length set it at 3 for normal sewing. 6 would be a longer stitch.

Feeding device (with "teeth") does not come up

Reengage the feed dogs by pushing the feed dog button AND manually turning the flywheel towards you through one stitch sequence, you should see them moving back above the needle plate after a stitch has been made.

The fabric does not feed properly.

Remove the throat plate and clean out the lint in between the feed dogs (teeth). Make sure the throat plate is not bent downwards where the needle goes through. Also, after removing the lint turn the machine over by hand, the feed dogs at their highest point should be about 2mm above the throat plate.

Feed dog switch

Did you turn the handwheel? The feed teeth will not come up until the machine is operated. Run it a few stitches and they will come up.

Material will not feed across pressure plate of my new home model sx 2122 sewing machine

This machine has a pressure regulator on the left side. You should look to see that it is not loosened. When you lift up on the presser foot it should have resistance.
Then look at the feed dogs to see that they are moving, Set the stitch length at 4 and turn the hand wheel. The teeth should move towards the back of the machine. They should also be slightly above the needle plate as they go back and below the surface of the plate as they come forward.
If they don't rise above the plate , remove the needle plate and clean between the slots of the teeth.

The fabric doesn't move forward.

We need to do some examining. Remove the foot. Put the stitch length dial at the longest stitch. Turn the wheel and see if the feed dogs move about 1/4 inch. Also check to see that they rise just slightly above the needle plate. If it does these two things it will work. If the teeth don't rise above the plate, remove the needle plate and clean the lint out from between the rows of teeth. If you find a lot of tightly packed lint there this will solve your problem. Reinstall the needle plate and foot. If the feed dogs don't move about 1/4 inch, you probably have a problem which is going to require the services of a technician.
