Service Pack 2? In Windows XP? That's been out for a number of years. Scan for viruses, scan for malware, do checkdisk an defrag. Then download and install SP 3. Don't worry about SP2. If you have Vista, follow the same procedure and then install SP2
yes, if you download and install the sp2 when you restart the computer it runs automatically !! maybe when you restart the computer it gves you a configuration steps, if you arent secure you can see you windows version and service pack in the control panel
Service Pack 2 is known to cause issues. Can you restart the computer into safe mode?
Turn on the computer, press F8 while the computer is turning on, choose safe mode and remove Service Pack 2 by going to Control Panel, Add Remove Programs or if in windows vista or 7 - go to Programs and Features and select Service Pack 2 and click Uninstall.
Restart the computer and let me know if your computer comes back on.
Windows is sometimes very annoying, I believe the update configuration file is probably corrupted. You can download the SP2 manually here. You can also change your update settings to "install updates without prompting so that" so that it will install updates in the background without disturbing you.
Windows service pack 2 is a huge update and takes a long time to complete, I will suggest walking away from your computer and having lunch, go to sleep, watch a movie, etc... while the update finishes. If you have already done this with the same result? I would look for a Windows XP SP2 disk (XP with service pack 2 integrated) and try that. Otherwise Microsoft sent out many disks containing the SP2 update itself on a disk, and you could try the SP2 update from one of those (if you can find one) after your clean install. Good luck.
