It's a bad capacitor on the clock/display board. The solution was posted elsewhere in FixYa. I had the same problem. If you can desolder/solder small components on an electronic circuit board, you can fix this yourself. Mine was capacitor C3, originally a 68uF 35V component. I replaced it with a 100uF 35V as the closest one I could find at Radio Shack which was a $1.29 now my clock/display is back to normal! Saved a lot of money to fix it myself and I know if it happens again over time, I know exactly what to do next time.

Are there any tricks to disassembling the front panel?

It may be obvious, I haven't looked yet, but thought I should ask.

    Thanks.

It's a bad capacitor on the clock/display board. The solution was posted elsewhere in FixYa. I had the same problem and was told I should replace the clock/display board, which would solve the problem, but costs about $150 plus labor. If you can desolder/solder small components on an electronic circuit board, you can fix this yourself. Mine was capacitor C3, originally a 68uF 35V component. I replaced it with a 68uF 63V as the closest one I could find at Jameco.com which was less than a $1. Lo and behold, my clock/display is back to normal! Saved a lot of money to fix it myself and I know it will happen again over time, so I know exactly what to do next time.

This is a common problem with certain Jenn-Air and Maytag model ranges. Unfortunately, this is more of design issue. the problem is the location of the Electronic Oven Control board. If your EOC is located directly above the oven door in the front of the stove, the heat from the oven rolls out the oven door vents and right across the circuit card. This causes the board to overheat and the display to dim. Eventually, the EOC will fail or become unreadable. This is why some customers keep extended warranties or service plans on them so they can get the board replaced every so often (not cost effective if you ask me). One customer I knew had her EOC replaced 6 times! I do not know if there is a recall on these ranges, but I do know that SOME manufacturers will replace the unit, or provide a field change that modifies the circuit board or provide some sort of heat shield if it is a reoccuring problem. This may be something worth looking into. I know I haven't provided you with a solution, but I do hope that I've given you some answers on the cause.

Sorry I couldn't have been more of a help with a better solution. Unfortunately, I have personally experienced this problem on several occasions. The display will eventually get to the point where you can't read it. You can deal with the inconvenience or replace the control board. From past experience, this may be a reoccurring problem. Good luck to you.

Throughout fixya you can find that abundant references to the capacitor C3 being the problem, on the electronic oven control board (EOC),or electronic range control (ERC), or otherwise known as the clock control or clock assembly, part # 71001799. The capacitor fails NOT because of being near a hot area but because it was one of the faulty electrolytic capacitors made in Taiwan at a certain time - seehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_p... It is 68 microferads, 35 V, and rated for 105 degrees C, however the 100 microferad 35V rated for 85 degrees C seems to have worked fine for the majority of people and thats all they had to do. I had the same dimmed/out clock display and then I did the capacitor soldering replacement fix after I had ordered a replacement control clock board and had the same result with both the new board and the repaired board. The clock display comes on bright but can't adjust it and the oven does not work but the fan and light turn on and off several times a minute. Basically the only thing that still works is the stove top burners. However by just gently moving and bending the Mylar bus that goes from the touch panel to the control clock board, I could make these weird things stop but the oven touch buttons as well as most every other button still do not work (do not recommend the novice doing anything with power on). It seems to be this would indicate that the variably named touch/switch/membrane panel part # 71002033 needs replacing but some people have indicated the power relay circuit board part # 12001689 is occasionally the problem located somewhere in the rear of the stove may need replacing. I've seen other people ask this same question without an answer - perhaps it is a guess.

My clock dimmed out. Had to replace the clock board. Note; relatively inexpensive BOARD rebuilder [does clocks, Oven Relay for ranges, and a lot of TIMER boards for other appliances, is at
www.ApplianceTimers.com.
If you are not a solderer, this is a good alternative.

Cost range is about 1/3 of that for new boards.

Be sure to check the warranty details. On our Jenn-air in wall oven, the basic warranty was one year, but the electronics was covered for five years. That covered the dim display replacement the first time at least.

I will try the suggested capacitor replacement this time before buyihg another display. And see about adding a cooling fan.

Replacing the capacitor worked. Thanks for the suggestion.

Radio Shack was handy, but their capacitors are rated for an even lower max temp than the original part (85C vs.105C). So they too will likely die if heat is the problem as someone else suggested, and which seems reasonable. If your installation allows, adding some ventilation holes for room air supply and/or a small computer type fan may be worth the trouble. The capacitor replacement is easy, but PC boards like this are not designed to hold together under repeated soldering cycles.

You need to replace the C3 capacitor on the control board

http://fixitnow.com/wp/2009/01/28/cheap-fix-for-a-dim-display-on-an-oven-control-panel/

You can replace only the C3 - it is 68uF / 35V and you can go to Radio Shack and get their part # 272-1028 - 100uF/35V one. It takes all but 10 minutes to re-solder the new one in place

My clock and temperature display is dim

Hi, this will happen over a period of time and its just heat related. the control panel isn't insulated properly and , there has been a larger than normal transfer of heat to the inside of the control panel where the circuits are housed.

If this is a problem, i recommend replacing the control board. it will fix the dim issue.
