After installing the printer software you need to program scanning software.
Below are the steps to program scanning software:
To program the Scan To button:
Select Start/Programs or All Programs (Windows XP)/HP/HP Laserjet 3050, 3052, 3055, 3390, 3392/Scan
Click the Setup to open the Scan To Setup Wizard.
Select the Change the destinations that show up on the all-in-one control panel when I press the <Scan To> button and then click Next .
Check the Allow me to scan by pressing the Scan To button on the all-in-one check box.
Choose the destination by moving them from the PC window (the left window) to the All-in-one window (the right window).
NOTE: The All-in-one window might contain items set up by other computers that are connected to the all-in-one. You cannot make changes to these items.
Click Update .
To Create a destinations:
Follow steps 1-2 from the above steps.
Select Create a new destination with settings that I will specify and then select Next .
Select the Save it to my computer and then press Next .
Select the scan preferences and then select Next .
Select the scan destination folder and file format type and then select Next .
NOTE: If you wish to use a custom folder for your scan destination, you will need to create the folder prior to this setup wizard in order to browse to it.
Select the quality level you would like the file to be saved as.
Name the new destination on the computer, check the Send this new destination to the all-in-one check box, and enter a name for the display on the all-in-one. Then select Next .
Confirmation allows you to verify your settings. Select Save .
Once the new destination has been saved, the new destination will be configured as one of the Scan To destinations on the printer.

Could be the drum needs to be replaced, or the toner is very low, swap the entire cartridge out with another one and that should fix your copy quality problem, it it does not anothing you need to look at is GO to PRINTER PROPERTIES, if you don`t know how, try to print a document and in the pop up window got to PROPERTIES at the top left and deselect SAVE TONER and try again.
Hope this helps, keep us posted,.

Sounds like you need the updated drivers for the printer, universal are different and may not work. Follow this link for the updated drivers, install and attempt to scan. Sometimes it may only work to scan if you go inside the deivces and printers option and scan from there. To do that go to start, devices and printers, right click on the laserjet scanner and click on scan. Sometimes if you try to scan from here rather than from the scanner itself it works. Here is the link
choose the Windows 7 64 bit download, I would download the full software option.
Let me know if this works
