Can't get by the windows log in screen

I have an old work lptop that I was going to let the kids use. However when I pwr up I can't get past the windows log in screen. Its been about 2+yrs sine I've used this laptop and have no remote chance of recalling login at that time
Any way to reset or boot past this?

To help out you, and my collegue expert:

No need to boot in to Safe Mode to log in as Administrator. You can go to the login, press Ctrl + Alt + Del 2 or 3 times and the traditional login will replace the Welcome Screen. Simply type Administrator as user and try loging.

@ Philster, this is only meant to support your solution.

Assuming you did not set an administrator password - you can hit the F8 key when booting - and then select Safe Mode. Once the machine boots to safe mode, you'll be able to login using the Administrator account, and you can go into the control panel to change the actual user's password.

If you did set an admin password that you do not recall, you can use Petter Nordahl-Hagen's Offline NT Password & Registry Editor to reset the Admin password.

The only problem with this solution is that not all machines are setup to allow this. My main machine, for example, does nothing but bring up the task manager no matter how many times I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del

See by the moonlight it's quarter past midnight time kid and I were home and hour and a half ago

The verse seems to be from a New England Folk Tale "The Old Woman and her Pig" -

However, you will see that your version is not there, although something similar is.

The following verses are probably a more accurate:

"As I went over London Bridge
I lost a guinea and found a kid,
and the kid wouldn't go.
See, by the moonlight,
'tis half-past midnight time kid
and I were home an hour and a half ago.

"Then I went along a little way, and I found a staff; and I said,
'Pray, staff, lick kid; kid won't go," etc.
In still another telling, the old woman, instead of remarking the lateness of the hour by the moon, says,
"Piggy won't jump over the stile,
and I sha'n't get home in time
to get my old man's supper to-night."

My son passworded my hp lptop while he was home from Afganistan. I tried to use my computer today but I can't get past the sign in screen that asked for user name and password. I haave no idea what he...

Power on pc->immediately start tapping the F8 key on keyboard->select safe mode->press enter->login as administrator(password might be blank, u can give it a try).If successful u would be on a desktop screen with safe mode on all four corners. Now go to start->control panel->useraccounts->select ur son's account and remove the password. This is worth a try.If it doesnt work the only option is to reinstall the windows(if u cant remember the pwd for your son's login)

PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) Use the vista DVD to go to the repair mode.
2) From the same screen where you do the system restore, there's an option to open an administrative command prompt.
3) That should open in X:\Sources or something like that
4) Go to the windows drive by entering C:
5) Now go to the windows event log folder on your machine (C:\Windows\System32\winevt):
cd c:\windows\system32\winevt
6) ren Logs Logs_bad
7) mkdir Logs
This will create an empty folder for new event logs.

Restart the system. Hope this helps

Can't get by the windows log in screen

1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)
2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”
3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now
5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.
6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”
Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.
7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.
8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”
9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.
10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.
11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.
12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).
13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

Windows XP Log In screen removal

Try removing the machine from the domain first. Right click on my computer, go to Properties, go to the Computer Name tab, and where it says " To rename thic computer or join domain, click Change", click on the Change button.
In the following screen, select Workgroup, give it any name and click OK.
Before you do this, make sure you have an account with admin privileges on the local machine (make sure you know username and password for this account).
