More on my frozen maytag spin, motor seems to continue to run (i.e. the pump belt is turning), but the agitator belt is slipping. I assume this is the switch that is screwed down to the motor, about $60. does this help? so I think the motor is running, as the pump pulley is rotating fine. curious question... how does the switch activate (or rather deactive) the brake? no wires run to the brake, which seems mounted right on top of the pulley. also, with power off, I can turn the agitator direction, but the pulley eventually freezes up when turning spin direction... I assume since there is no signal to turn off break with power off, and that is the default for safety. so still a switch you think? motor probably OK, since it turns the pump, with agitator belt slipping.

maytag washer won't spin. still need a little more advice before buying parts. details: motor will run both ways. pump belt moving, but agitator belts slips on spin cycle with motor running. so I assume three causes: bad brake, bad motor switch (needs to unlock brake for spin?), or tub is froze up. This machine has sat for a couple of years unused. I was going to buy the switch, but wanted to check here first for more advice. Could dirt and crude case the tub to get locked in place. Is there a way to check... I cannot budge it at all in spin cycle (with or w/o power).

Okay here is another thought... are your sure that it isn't the pum that is getting tight and seizing up when you turn it in that direction?? Maybe you need to disconnect the coupling and spin just the motor and just the pump to see which it really is that is causing the problem.
Still don't think it is the brake...

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Smoke come in out while spinning

Don't know what machine you have if it has a belt check it. Take belt off & see the motor turns freely also with the belt off see if you can turn the drum if one of them won't turn the belt will slip & cause burning smell. Small clothes getting under the agitator even sometimes in the pump can cause this , check under agitator & check the pump it may not turn if a sock or something gets in it & this can cause the belt to slip. If these seem ok put it in spin & watch the motor it could have a short & will smoke. Good luck
hope this helps.

No agitation or spin? try these:

Motor Coupling If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor coupling might have failed. The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. It is designed to fail if the washer is overloaded in order to protect both the motor and
Drive Belt If the washer won't spin or agitate, check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't spin or agitate properly.

Drive Motor If the washer won't spin or agitate the drive motor might be defective. This is not common. Check all of the other related parts to this symptom before replacing the motor. If the motor is visibly burned out or physically damaged, replace it.

Stator Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the stator assembly might be burned out. The stator is essentially one half of a motor, it interacts with the tub by creating a strong electro-magnet. If the stator burns out the washer won't spin or agitate. Check the stator for continuity. This part is often misdiagnosed.

Transmission or clutch assembly not engaging due to going out or slipping.

Door or Lid Latch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Motor Control Board If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor control board might be defective. The motor control board provides power to the motor as well as direction and force. If the motor control board is defective the washer may not work at all or function properly.

HELLO THERE:

SYMPTOM: WASHER FILLS, BUT DOESN'T AGITATE AND/OR SPIN
1) Check the imbalance/lid switch FOR continuity. Check also the speed selector switch (if any), the water level and water temperature switches for proper operation .
NOTE: If any of the selector switches on the console are only partially pushed in, it may cause improper function.
2) Check for a broken or badly worn belt.
3) Check the motor rollers and tension springs for damage and the motor roller tracks for jamming. Any of these might cause the belt to be loose.
4) Check the appropriate timer circuits for continuity.
5) Remove the belts and see if the motor will start. If you hear the motor buzzing, but it doesn't start in either or both directions, test the capacitor (if any) and starting switch
If it does start with the load removed, turn the pump and transmission pulleys by hand, in both directions, to see which is locked up. If the pump is locked, If the transmission pulley is locked,. Note that the transmission pulley will normally be very stiff when turning it in the clockwise direction, as you look at the bottom of the washer.

Won't spin, agitator won't turn. Repair it or just get a new one? 8 yrs old.

Hello,if your washer won't spin first check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follow.
1. If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely or if it is frozen or stiff replace it.
If the pump belt is broken or looks quite warm, replace it but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.

AGITATOR: If the agitator won't turn, the likely cause is "Lid Switch" because if the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
Thanks

Drum doesn't spin or agitate. Only drains. Timer works.

If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt. If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Motor coupler Many washers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it. Belts Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.) Clutch If your washer was made by GE®, it may use a clutch for agitating the clothes. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician. Drive motor Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor. Drive pulleys

The drum does not spin. the agitator works normally, then when time to empty the pump works, but an odor of the belt slipping is noticed and the drum will not spin. When lifted up to inspect the belts,...

seems to be a transmisson problem, the pump is driven by the motor also. so the motor should be ok. and the agitator works ok. believe it would be a transmission gear failure.
