Mitsubishi WS55511 I have tried to converge the three colors on the grid but it won't allow me to adjust the vertical settings. The top half of the screen is blurry and the color is out of alignment. What can I do?

  • freefall83 Mar 28, 2008

turned tv (WS55511) off at night, was working fine. turned on in the morning and all convergence was way off. could not adjust vertical or horizontal on blue or red. Removed center board and looked at IC8C01 on both sides of board. No sign of overheating. Could not locate IC8C02 (not on same heatsink) looked on all boards but could not locate. I did find L9A52 and L9A50 (located on the center board) badly burned. Don't know what these components are, could you identify them and provide part numbers?

  • freefall83 May 11, 2010

Need part numbers for L9A50 and L9A52 and where to purchase. Went to web site you gave for service manuals but could not find one for the WS55511.

It looks like the vertical convergence IC is defective. Is a common failure on these TV sets.
I would suggest to change them both at the same, vertical and horizontal.

You will need to change your Convergence ICs and possibly the resistors right next to them. They are located in the very center board of the chassis on a heat sink !C8C01 & IC8C02 . The part numbers for these ICs are STK393-110. If you can solder you can buy these parts for about 10.00 each and takes maybe an hr to solder in. A TV shop will want at least 400. Thats sad but unfortunatly a reality. A service manual may come in handy as it list the locations and proceedures for realighning the colors with the remote, and will list the resistor ratings if they turn out to need replacing as well. You can get one for 10.99 for your set at the following link. They will email it to you if you ask them to. They also offer free unlimited support with the manual. Hope this helps let me know if I can assist you further or if you need to know where to purchase the parts.

How i adjust horizontal size and vertical size

To answer your concern, all you have to do is to change the setting of your aspect ratio on your TV.

Here is my suggested way to procede:

1. Apply 1080i signal, which should produce an oversized HD image on ColorStream1or 2.
2. Select an HD channel that is broadcasting standard 4:3 image, not wide screen.
3. Switch to the Service Mode ( Please refer to the above links). In the Service mode, press channel up/down to find the Adjustment parameters needed for the following steps.

4. Adjust HIT with volume up/down control for the image height to 22.5 inches.

6. Adjust WID for image width of 30 inches, (22.5*4/3)
7. Adjust HPOS to center the image.
8. Adjust PARA and TRAP to minimize geometric distortion.
9. Switch into Convergence mode and Adjust VLIN to get equally spaced horizontal grid lines.
10. Measure the length of the central grid lines and note the number of horizontal and vertical grid lines. This information is used to create an overlay grid.
11. Create the overlay grid on 40x25 x0.003 inch clear Acetate sheet, which you can get at the Art Supply store for under $2. Draw the grid with a fine line erasable pen. Draw vertical and horizontal lines through the center of the sheet so that the lengths are the same as the central grid lines. Now draw the grid so that it has the same number of lines as the convergence grid but are equally spaced, with the outer ones at the ends of the central lines.
12. Cut off about 1/4 inch from the right side of the sheet so that the sheet can lay flat against the screen, which is slightly less than 40 inches.
13. Put a reference mark on the TV frame 2.5 inches down from the upper left side of the screen.
14. Place the overlay on the screen so that the upper edge lines up with the reference mark. The overlay sticks by electrostatic attraction.
15. Use convergence controls to remove grid distortion and converge grid colors. Refer to the Anamorphic link for details.
16. Enjoy 1080i.

Other Comments:
I didn't realize I could create the overlay grid before placing the Acetate sheet on the TV screen, until I finished drawing the grid with the sheet placed on the screen. I added grid lines as called for in the procedure. I'm sure this method took much longer no only to draw the lines but some of them were difficult to see.

Part way through the convergence procedure, I became concerned that the image width was off since I did my screen adjustment with wide screen image. Thus, I decided to repeat that step with a 4:3 screen.

I confirmed the need to press 7 often to save results since after I adjusted one grid color without it, I accidentally hit a key that switched me out of convergence mode and when I switched back, all settings were gone.

Another mistake I made was not realizing that the cursor color determines which grid gets moved.

There is a line right in the middle of the tv going vertically.. the left side is fine but the right side is like 3d tv.. why is that.. Model # WD-62628--- S# 117086... Mitsubishi

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Color convergence problem

If you follow the instructions on the other thread, you should be able to resolve the problem. Try the simple stuff first. Resolder the pins of the convergence ICs and see if that alone resolves the problem. Sometimes that is all it takes.

PROJECTION TV COLORS DISTORTED

You can try to enter the menu and go to advanced setting and adjust the convergence. Push audio to go to advanced convergence and do the multipoint convergence to re-align the colors. If this doesn't solve, you may need to do a hardware repair.. all projections of this type will need a convergence IC repair sometime during their lifetime.

Mitsubishi Rear Projection WS

5ebe434.jpg A projection television and a convergence control method thereof are provided. The projection television, which magnifies images displayed on cathode ray tubes (CRTs) for the colors red, green, and blue using lenses and projects the magnified images onto a screen, includes a convergence control apparatus capable of adjusting the convergence while an input image signal is displayed, the convergence control apparatus including: an image signal decoder which processes the input image signal to generate a data signal, horizontal and vertical synchronous signals, and a start signal indicating the start of either the horizontal or vertical synchronous signal; a convergence control unit which normally projects an image signal output from the image signal decoder onto the screen and performs convergence control using a predetermined region of the screen displaced from a visible region of the screen according to a convergence control command; and a main microcomputer which inputs the convergence control command to the convergence control unit when the start signal is input from the image signal decoder, stops the convergence control when a completion signal is input from the convergence control unit, and performs a control operation to continuously display the image signal during the convergence control.

More than likely your akai has defective stk392-040 Convergence chips . it also may have open resistors generally 3.9 ohm flame proff. this board is attached to the top left looking from the back of the set it is screwed on by 1 screw black in the center . after installation this will probably half to be converged dinamically. which means you will half to get to the grid this is done by using the remote press mute 183 quicly to enter numbers on thew remote 2 to adjust red 4 to adjust blue horizonta 6 to adjustred vertical and 8 to adjust red vertical using center button to go up and down
