Rattle Problem w/ subwoofer

No idea the model number but my speakers are 7 years old, had them stored in a box in garage for a couple months. Its a 5 speaker surround sound system. Prior to that they were hooked up to my computer. Question is what makes the rattling "paper" sound in the subwoofer and how can I fix it?

Re: Rattle Problem w/ subwoofer

See the rear cone, spider and voice coil junction at rest and when cone is manually lifted outward/forward.Then you can easily tell if the spider has separated, as there is little pressure needed to move the cone manually, in and out of the gap. Compare that pressure to your good sub. If there is a notable difference in physical pressure to move either cone, you can rest assured that the spider is not moving or providing resistance to cone manipulation. This is a sure sign of spider/coil joint failure and can easily be sees as you conduct these tests. If that is what you see then repair it or change with new one

No sound from subwoofer

If your subwoofer does not work on your altec lansing speakers,
more than likely you blew the subwoofer amplifier board.
I have an ADA-885 system and bought it brand new back in
November 2000 and has been flawlessly operating great up
until this past month when my subwoofer went out but my
"satellite" speakers kept working. After disassembling the
subwoofer box I first noticed that the subwoofer amplifier
board is seperate from the rest of the grouped boards for
the dolby and satellite speakers. The subwoofer box is
designed to use the air from the subwoofer to actually
cool the amplifier boards inside the unit, great feature
until your subwoofer goes out, that is when your main
amp will more than likely fail soon after the sub amp
fails, as it uses the air from the subwoofer to keep the
amps cool. I know this might be an older post but
hopefully I can put it in the right category to hopefully
be able to help someone out in the future.

You can test the ohms of the speaker with a multi
tester. It's a dual voice coil speaker, 6 ohms each.

Well my system is broke and needs another
subwoofer amplifier board so if anybody reads
this and has this subwoofer, I need my sub amp
fixed ! or if you have the subwoofer unit maybe
and nothing else to go with it but the subwoofer
lights up, give me a jingle, I'd buy it from you !!

I just took my sub apart and found that the surround on the driver speaker inside the sub was totally crumbled and lying in pieces throughout the sub box.

I'm looking around now for specs on the sub speaker so I can find a replacement.

Depending on the software that runs the sound card (you can find it in the control panel), the ports may be configured differently than they used to be. Check in the control panel and see if there is way to adjust the "plugs" and what they mean. Some of the sound cards allow you to change your mic to a sub and your input to an output!

Subwoofer fuse 'holder' missing.

tape or solder a piece of metal across where the fuze and holder would go.
go to radio shack, pick up a small cartridge style fuze holder and an appropriate replacement fuze. (if you dont have the original fuze, dont bother with this method) Open the box or case to gain access to the circuit board. solder a new holder to the contacts.

Be aware that I have no clue what the fuze holder on that particular model looks like.

Inside subwoofer

Most likely the whole thing is glued together. You'll probably have to use force to get it apart, and it probably won't look as good when you put it back together.

The system has stopped turning on

I would connect your speaker system to another computer that has a working external sound system. If your speaker system fails to work there as well I wouldn?t waste any more time on it nor would I do anything to risk voiding the warranty. Your speaker warranty period is two years and you will want to get these exchanged as soon as possible. Even with the replacement set your warranty will still expire two years from your purchase date assuming you have your receipt. If you don?t have the receipt they can determine the manufacturing date from the serial number and will use that as the beginning of the warrantee period. Replacing them as soon as possible with give you a year to exercise them to ensure there are no hidden problems in the replacement set as well. Good luck and please don?t forget to rate this post.
