Sony DSC-w50 zoom not working

I can turn on the camera and take pictures as long as I do not use the zoom. If I try to zoom in, the error message will appear asking me to switch off and on.

I tried the pull and twist, that didn't work. This is the second time it has happened, the first time Sony covered it. Now it is out of warranty. Do you have any other ideas? What causes it?

If this error message appears, turn off the camera and remove the batteries for 30 seconds. Afterwards, reinsert the batteries and turn the camera back on. Perform a manual reset of the camera. Once you perform this it will be back to factory settings and you will lose any pictures stored on your camera.

This is what sony cameras do when the lens has become jammed. There are multiple different reasons that the lens can jam but the result is the camera being unable to move it as expected and presenting that error message. Sometimes the lens can be manipulated gently (if extended at all) and freed from the jammed state. Failing this, disassembly is required. Check with your manufacturer for warranty service status and recalls. If they will not cover it you can find a repair provider online. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
