Error tone Please help! My Maxtor drive wasn't doing this yesterday. When I went plug it in today, it is giving me an error tone over and over. I unplugged it and the USB and waited a few minutes and tried to plug it back up but it just keeps giving me that error tone. Any suggestions??? Please??

Return or contact Maxtor. For a fee they have the equipment and processes (that are proprietary) to retrieve your data. Do not restore the HD because it will erase ALL information!

Hard Drive not accessible, now not recognised by computer

Do you have another computer you can plug it into? The problem could be with your USB. If it is, see what updates you installed and then removed that may have affected that. You can also go to the manufacturers web site and download the original firmware or updated firmware files.

Worked yesterday / not working today

Someone else figured this out, but I've seen a lot of people with the same problem. Hopefully this will help you with yours. This is for WinXP and Windows Vista. It worked great for me.

1 - Disconnect the HD from USB and power supply.
2 - There are 2 screws at the back. Unscrew and open the box. (The plastic is kinda hard to open be careful)
3 - Now you have a metal box in your hands. Unscrew and open it.
4 - Now you will see a HD and a controller board. There are 3 screws that holds the controller board. Take them out.
5 - Now slide out the hard drive and controller board out gently.
6 - Unplug the controller board (power socket and IDE socket)from the Hard disk.
7 - Look at the back you will see jumper settings. (Mine was set on Cable Select.)
8 - Take the jumper out and plug it to Master ON position. now put it all back together.

Audiable tone from the inside of my Maxtor HD

Well thats a toughie, theres a recovery company that will pull the platter's out and install it into a functional drive, recovery experts or something. You can try it yourself but it's delicate on a laptop drive but not impossible.

You need to open the enclosure and either put the drive in another enclosure or connect it directly to your computer.

Or you can pay to send it to data recovery people and they will get all the data off.

Maxtor external hard drive

I'd first check the unit on a second computer. If it does the same thing, then you likely have a defective unit
