We keep getting vertical lines appearing on the photographs we take using the canon powershot a470 one day it was fine the next the lines started appearing no settings were adjusted it hasn't been knocked...

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Your problem is actually a combination of 2: CCD sensor and settings. You need to go with the cam to a professional repair center to check the CCD sensor, lens, allignment of optics, syncronization between software and mechanical componets, etc. I consider its a problem that can't be solved with professional assistance. In my, Canon PowerShot A470 Digital Camera there is problem during picture taking are not clean and many lines appear in photos

Try taking it into a photographic shop (or just Boots) and ask them if they could clean the lens.
If cleaning the lens doesn't work, then you have a faulty camera and if this happens, you will have to get a new one if the warrentyu is out.

A horizontal or vertical red line appears on picture.

Red lines are caused by glare. Avoid photographing shiny surfaces that reflect excessive amounts of light into your lens.
