Question about Magellan GPS 315 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Magellan 315 On power up, the screens prompts you to press enter to continue. However, pressing the keypad produces no response. Unit becomes locked. Tried the complete reset (pressing on screen awhile holdoing down on the power button???) no results.Batteries have to be removed to turn power off. After several attempts it may operate properly. Anyone know what is going on and how to fix this.

Re: Magellan 315

That unit does not have a touch screen so holding the screen while powering up wont do anything. I'm not sure which key it is on that model, but to do a reset you hold down one of the keys while powering up. Try holding down the enter key while you power up. If that doesn't work, try again with the other keys until you find it. If it doesn't reset, you may have a dead keypad.

Magellan 315 frozen

Occasionally, a unit will need to be reset. This can be due to software errors, firmware updates or simply at the command of technical support staff. A reset either will restart the unit, possibly clearing up any minor errors, or will restore the unit to the settings it was built with. There are three major Magellan units, which utilize different methods to perform this task.

Things You'll Need:
  • A thin object (such as a paper clip)

Using the stylus, tap "Main Menu" and select "View."
Tap "Settings," and select "Restore Factory Settings." You will be given the option to confirm this action. Be sure that you want to reset to the settings that the GPS was built with. This action is irreversible.
Tap "Confirm," and the unit will begin to reset.

Maestro/Roadmate GPS Units
Locate the button marked "Reset" on the left, right or bottom of the unit.
Using a thin object, such as a paper clip, depress the button for two to three seconds. The unit should reset.
If the unit does not reset, immediately press the button again and hold it for up to 10 seconds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not attempt to perform a factory reset on the Roadmate or Maestro GPS units by holding down both the "Reset" and "Power" buttons. This will cause the GPS unit to format its own hard drive. Doing so will erase all data, including the GPS software, from the unit.

Blue screen with magellan logo , this is what I see after turn on my gps receiver, I tryed to push any button but anything change on the screen, to shut it off i have to use 'enter' ,'cancel' and power...

This is the boot screen, Remove the power connection, and reinsert while you press the "Cancel" button at the same time, if done correctly, your Roadmate should continue to boot and enter the user mode.

My eXplorist XL is locked up

Error message at start-up reads: "Press ENTER to continue NAND, Press ESC to cancel". Either choice I seclect and the unit shuts-down.
"With you XL turned off press nav + power; then change the numbers in the box from 00 to 95 by using the joystick and then press the joystick itself; (ENTER), accepting what is proposed...

After turning the gps on again and pressing enter the NAND will be configured and your gps will become in order again. Your system will immediately start to re-set itself.

If necessary, in usb file transfer mode, reload the basemap in the directory background maps..."

The only difference is that I had to load my SD card in the unit for it to work during the FORMAT.

My unit is NOW re-booting back to normal!

Firmware Update Fails

I'm not sure this will help, but per Magellan (see below), the firmware update must be run twice as your firmware is earlier than version 3. I have a GPS 315 with v2.03 and can't find a cable to update mine. My GPS 315 does not appear to have a cable connection either, just a screw port on the back for a carrying strap. Was your homemade cable wireless? How did you make it?

You must follow instructions exactly to avoid corrupting your unit's flash memory.
  1. Select the .zip file and save it to your hard drive. Open the .zip file using WinZip.
  2. Connect your receiver to your PC using the PC or Power/Data Cable.
  3. Turn on the receiver and press the NAV key.
  4. Make sure the batteries are at least 50% full.
  5. Select the MAGUP executable file from your PC.
  6. Follow the instruction until you see the message Upload Complete.
  7. If your unit's software version is earlier than 3.00, you will be prompted to turn the unit on again and load the software a second time. Follow the instructions.

eXplorist units have also some hidden and service functions. Like, if unit is off, you can to press:

- IN + PWR - to full selftest of unit (screen test, keypad test, NMEA test)
- OUT + PWR - to serial port test
- ESC + PWR - to burn-in process
- LIGHT + ENTER + RWR - tp uploading of new firmware
- NAV + PWR - to call Service Function window (see below)
- NAV + MENU + PWR - to force power off, equal remove batteries.
- GOTO + OUT + POWER - clear memory and set all settings as default.

IN + PWR helped to power up my unit.

Have you gone through the "Initialize" process again? If the memory has been cleared you will need to re-initialize. Refer to page 4 of your manual. Power On > Select Language > "ENTER" > INITIALIZE screen > "ENTER" > Select Region > "ENTER" > Select Area > "ENTER" > Enter Elevation > "ENTER" (if you don't know elevation, press enter) > Enter Time > "ENTER" > Enter Date > "ENTER"

Magellan 700 "freezing"

okyboky, Once you turn on your unit, the Magellan splash screen or animation is produced from the flash memory. To my experience anything past that is dependent on the hard drive. So, your unit is freezing up as soon as the user menu is displayed without any response to pressing keys or touch screen right? Have you tried (at the user menu) pressing "-" key and the repeat button (on top of unit) to enter the "secret" menu? if you can do that, then select reset user data. That seems to fix numerous problems. If you absolutely can't get past that screen, or get any type of sign of intelligence from it then your hard drive is either corrupt/damaged or you could just have a cable not secured. If the above doesn't work, and you don't plan on sending it in for repairs, then open it up and make sure the cable from the Hard drive to the main board (large board) are fastened. Of course, being grounded would be helpful in this situation and also be careful when you first open up the unit as the RF cable needs to be unplugged before seperating the two sides (front/back). Good luck and let me know how it turns out. -Daniel

Frozen screen when turned on

Kevin, Hmm... it worked fine the first two times you ran it, then all of a sudden it freezes at the user screen?? I'm not sure if your able to do this, but at the user menu, try pressing the (-)zoom out key and the repeat button a the same time. -If it does bring up the "secret" menu, try clearing user data. -If you have a program that allows you to update the software, version 4.32 I'm guessing (or 5.14) then at that "secret" menu select NAND Flash Format and re-load the software. If you can't access the "secret" menu and it locks up hard at the user menu w/out any responsiveness, I would suspect the hard drive is either bad or has corrupt data. I'm not sure if you can order just the hard drive from magellan/thales/tomtom/shaw but if you can then just replace the hard drive, nand flash format (above) and re-install your software via usb. Additionally, not that it helps your problem, but atleast you would know the pwr and keypad work if this works, press Enter, Cancel and power button at the same time, as this SHOULD power off your unit. Let me know if any new symptoms/problems come up or if you need further instructions. -Daniel
