Ok i asked before if my drive will burn both dvd and cd. the answer was yes. but when i installed the drive and ran my dvd creator program. it said this drive is dvd read only.

Hi mikey7420 ,

The drive name itself is the clue to know whether it can burn dvds or not.

  • In your case it's a CD-RW (read and write or rewritable) and DVD-ROM (Read only memory and not read and write or rewritable as in the case of CD)
  • Perhaps the one who told you did not understand your question properly , and understood it , in the sense that it can read CDs as well as DVDs , as far as Dvd-ROM drives are concerned many shopkeepers who are especially new working in the shop just make a guess and answer our question which could lead to this misunderstanding or incorrect information being passed on.
  • So the next time you buy a DVD drive which should have a read and write functionality as well , then look up for a CD_RW,DVD-RW drive.
  • Also remember that DVD-RW drive can by default read and write CDs as well , but it's not true for CD drives..
  • So usually a DVD-RW drive can read and write Cds as well as DVDs but a CD-RW drive can either read or read and write a DVD depending on whether it's a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW.
Hope this helps.

Can these disk be re write or erased? Please send me an email via affordableshutters@yahoo.com Corrington Maycock

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. The CD is not a Rewritable disk you can only burn once. If you need a DVD or CD that can be rewrite or erase look for DVD-RW or CD-RW.

Thanks for using Fixya

I can't get it to override a information on a disc or add more video to disc

There are several types of DVD disks:
* DVD-R -- "write-once-read-many"
* DVD+R -- "write-once-read-many"
* DVD-R DL -- "write-once-read-many" (dual-layer)
* DVD+R DL -- "write-once-read-many" (dual-layer)
* DVD-RW -- "quick-erase-then-rewritable"
* DVD+RW -- "quick-erase-then-rewritable"

So, there is no way to "add-later" -- once you have written, the disk is "closed" to further writing.
The 'RW' disks can be quick-erased (takes about 60 seconds) and then you can start again to write, but that still is not the same as "add more video".

Which dvd disks do I buy to burn a dvd on my optiarc dvd rw ad 7563a ATA Can I add later batches of pictures? can I reuse the DVD disks?

DVD media has several types:

* DVD-R ("write-once-read-many")
* DVD+R ("write-once-read-many")
* DVD-RW ("write/erase/rewritable")
* DVD+RW ("write/erase/rewritable")
* DVD dual-layer ("write-once-read-many")

Some CD/DVD-writing software allows multiple "sessions" (write a bunch of files, do not "close" the disk, much later write a bunch of files), so that you can "add" files to an "open" ("non-closed") CD/DVD disk.

How to format dvd-rw 1.4GB

There's no need to "format" any rewritable CD/DVD media.

The CD/DVD-writing software that came with your computer (Nero, Roxio, et cetera) has a "quick-erase" option, that takes less than two minutes to "erase" a rewritable disk.

By the way, a DVD holds 4.7GB, not just 1.4GB.
