Question about Samsung DVD-VR357

1 Answer

Picture to horizontal spaghetti

I have a Samsung DVD VR537 combo recording unit. Sometimes when I turn it on, or when it turns on by timer, the picture is split into horizontal spaghetti -- dozens of horizontal lines. This happens on local channels or cable channels -- and it doesn't happen every time. I am using a DIRECTV satellite tuner (model D-10) as the tuner. Any ideas what is happening and what I can do about it? Otherwise, aside from the fact that it's quite noisy, the unit seems very nice. sr23@aol.com -- sr23@att.net

Thank you for responding. I returned the unit with horizontal spaghetti after a call to Samsung. They suspected a processing error. I have an identical unit (DVD VR357) which also has an interesting glitch. Sometimes (not always) when it powers up, the baseband video output disappears. Truly weird, because if I press "record" (VCR, haven't tried this with DVD) and then play back the tape, the tape will have recorded.

it sounds like a signal issue but those recording combo units can be a little glitchy at times especially with a satellite receiver.. has this unit been working correctly before this happened and how old is this dvd? thanks, d

My Magnavox VCR/DVD combo groans when I set the timer recording. It doesn't make the noise when I turn it off.

I hate to sound elitist or negative, but VCR is over, much in the same way that cassette tapes are over. It is even getting hard to find DVD recorders which stand alone. Additionally, I would urge you to record all of your home movies and significant recordings to DVD while you can. VCR tapes degrade pretty rapidly compared to DVD. And now, even DVD is on the way out. Get up to speed. You'll be glad you did!

Can't switch from AV2 to AV1 with Samsung DVD-VR375 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo

To be able to select AV1, you have to first go into the setup menu and set the control set top box setting to OFF. I think you go to the menu >> setup >> features >> set top box control >> select OFF. Note that this has the side effect of erasing any previously stored timer settings.

Samsung DVD-SH855

Hi Thanks to all. Problem was solved by my son who suggested that I turn the unit off in standby mode. Samsung DVD-SH855 will not record via timer settings when the unit is left with pwr on. Only works if pwr switched off.
Had I known this prior to purchasing I would have purchased a brand that worked with pwr on.
