Question about Apple iPhone Smartphone

Blown speaker type noise with iphone reciever

Hello, I have an unlocked apple iphone running on version 1.1.1. A few weeks ago, I accidently dropped it, and ever since I have been having issues with the voice quality/reception. I am hearing a distinct "buzzing" sound everytime someone speaks. The caller is able to hear me just fine, but I am having a hard time hearing them on my end. Voice quality is very similar to having blown your speakers on your car stereo. I have to keep the volume very low to discern what the caller is saying. If I increase the volume on the iphone, I get this distinct buzzing sound coupled with the callers voice. I have scoured the web looking for a solution to this problem, but to no avail. I have reset the phone back to 1.1.1, but no luck. I think dropping the phone has somehow affected the speaker. Apart from returning the phone to apple (i have AT&T had to get the phone unlocked because I am on an old plan), do you guys have any suggestions on how to fix this hardware problem, or can anyone guide me to someone who may be able to help me?? All other applications on the phone are working fine, including the ipod-I am able to hear music/video through the speakers just fine. Please advise!!

Hello vascotech, thanks for your quick reply. You mean the earpiece on the iphone is broken correct? If I bring the earpiece back to AT&T, they will replace the phone or fix the phone and upgrade it to 1.1.3, which will render the phone useless (I have to use an unlocked phone because I have an old ATT plan and my SIM will not worked with a locked phone). Therefore, any suggestions on any service centers in the Chicago area that may be able to fix this problem without destroying any other hardware or software component on the phone? Please advise, thanks!!

I bought the phone unlocked with version 1.0.2 (the guy who sold me the phone told me that it was running on 1.1.1) So I had to have someone else upgrade to 1.1.1 Pretty sure he used turbo sim. Any ideas on where I can get the earpiece fixed?

  • doctorray Jan 25, 2008

Is that right? I thought that 1.1.3 can not be unlocked at the current time.

  • doctorray Jan 25, 2008

Two quick questions for you, is there any way to check to see if I have turbo sim? (not sure if I do because i didn't unlock the phone), and do you think the phone has to be virginized to 1.0.2 before taking it over to Apple? I originally took it to Apple store to have on of these so called "geniuses" look at the phone. the first thing they wanted to do was to restore the phone and upgrade to 1.1.3. As soon as I told them the phone was unlocked, they did not want to deal with me. If I go back to Apple, they will do the same thing.

  • doctorray Jan 25, 2008

So I should go to the Apple store without the SIM card? Wont they ask me why the SIM is not inserted? Also, should I delete all third party apps before showing them the phone. Sorry I am asking so many questions.

  • doctorray Jan 25, 2008

    Thanks Vascotech,
Your'e the man! I will delete whatever I can. Should I also delete the installer program on the phone? you are right about these guys being ***holes at the shop. Here is what has been installed on the phone: Simport, bigboss's community, community sources, youtube fix,bsd subsystem, open ssh, summerboard, and services. Does all this have to be deleted? Also, what is the significance of chcking the SIM card?

Hello,
I have seen this before three or four times on the i-phone. Your earpiece is broken and needs to be replaced. The firmware is not going to change anything. Bring it to at&t and they will flip it or repair it for you under warranty. If that is not an option, take it to any other service center that is qualified and certified, and they should be able to do it in like 45 min time while you wait. If you cant find anywhere to do it check my profile and we can help you out. Hope this helps.

    Yes Doc,

Thats right. The earpiece is cracked most likely. And yes, the problem is AT&T would relock the device after any service. Did you turbo sim it to get it unlocked??

  • John Bazigos
    John Bazigos Jan 25, 2008

If At&T relocks the device, it can still be unlocked using the turbo sim method. Even 1.1.3 was unlocked today. I suggest you get the device fixed. Ill walk you through the jailbreak and downgrade if need be. Thanks Doc

    Hey Doc,

If the Turbo sim was used you are in luck.Go to any AT&T and just get the repair done. Explain to them that you want that specific device back as opposed to a new one (we need the old baseband). Even if its flashed to 1.1.3 it can be downgraded and reunlocked using your turbo sim. It will take ten minutes after its rpaired, and i can even walk you throgh it over the phone. No worries. As for an indendent service center in Chicago, Im not entirely sure. I can refer you to my buddy who is a technician in Libertyville at Motorola, he could prbably do it for you. But I really do suggest doc that you go to AT&T and have the repair done there. You wont payanything, then you got full tech support through me to get it re unlocked. You already have the turbosim

Yeah it happened today. The solution was found. Also, even if yours was flashed to 1.1.3 . Your baseband or bootloader would still be the old one, therefore still unlockable when downgraded

Hey Doc, pop the sim card out of the device using a pin. Its at the top. There is a little hole there. When its out check and see if there is a brown "shell" on one side of your sim card. It should be shaped like your sim. When you go to the apple store, be authoritive, tell them the issue is not firmware or sofftware, and THAT YOU KNOW its a hard ware issue where the earpiece is broken and needs to be replaced. This should save them 15 min in turn. They wont have to diagnose whats already known.

    Hey Doc,

Dont ever be sorry about asking questions on a forum. This is why we are here. No worries. Yes, go without the sim if it was turbo sim'd. They cant say anything about the sim not being there. Its your right to have service while you are under contract with AT&T. You had to pull your card out to use a device that actually works. How could they argue with that? And yes, i would erase those apps if i could. They can be ***holes somtimes at the shop. Feel free to ask me anything, anytime Doc.

  • John Bazigos
    John Bazigos Jan 25, 2008

    Hey Doc,

Reason we checked the sim card is because we dont want the apple and AT&T guys to know you unlocked the device. If they see the turbo sim, they'll know. The way they are trained is to try and determine wether you altered the device. They'll try and void the warranty. Delete all the apps, that way they dont get "wise" to us lol . And again, be authoritvem you are not there to flash the device, you know the earpice is defective, tell them thats all the service you need

Iphone voice quality

Hi Doc,
Yes It seems that the bump when you dropped it cracked the earpiece. It happens often. Keep in mind that this is the first cell phone apple has made so they are still learning. It could have been worse.Trust me! The i-phone when dropped on the otherside (bottom) the wifi radio breaks! That part is next to impossible to get. Back to your problem. Like i was saying, its a simple repair for any authorized service center with i-phone experiance to replace. We do i-phone repairs quite a bit at my store, as the i-phone is not sold by any carrier herein Canada, so people come to us. It should cost you about 60$ with installation if its an out of warranty item. If you want us to do it for you, just go to our site aand shoot me an email
