Def sounds like the fan , from where you say the sound is coming from . normally the fan should be able to be cleaned the panned holding the fan in the left hand corner . clean the fan with compressed air , or a paint brush . if this fails then you need a new fan .
A google search with the Laptop Model and Part number from the Fan/Heatsink is always a good place to start. Also, ebay can turn up some really good deals on laptop parts. Here's a link to a Fan/Heatsink combo I found using a Google search within the shopping section.
You would need to open it, has the laptop been dropped? This is the only way I know that could cause this problem. I suggest you fix this problem because it will cause overheating of you chips, that will eventually cause failure. Opening a laptop is not for novice, unless you trust yourself you can do it, have it done in a shop that fixes laptops. Some electronic shop can do this for you at a resonable price.
problably data-cable of LCD has contact problems or is broken. Consult someone with experience in opening the Display. DIY only if experienced, since you can make a $40 repair a $400 repair accidantly ... ;-)
