Re: No Installation CD

No it's not needed, the main things you need to know is the IP address that the router is set to and it's login details which hopefully your friend can give you. (default IP:, default login and password: admin and admin)

After that, as long as your HS Internet modem has an ethernet port you would connect that to the Linksys and your PC's to the routers LAN ports. You can then also login to the router and setup the wireless part if you have any wireless devices to use with it.

Re: No Installation CD

It is recommended to install the software before connecting cables. You will need to look on the underside of the wireless router for the model number & version No# to get the correct software. You state it is a WRT54G. Go to this site
Where you see Downloads click where you see Click Here
Fill in the needed information and Linksys will take you to your software. At the above site under the search window is a blue bar. Listed there is a link to Learning Center. All the help you need to get up and running. One point, if you are going to use the wireless end of the router, setup a secure site with password protection. That will keep neighbors & others from tapping into your bandwith for free.

To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption to protect your wireless network and Internet from unauthorized access.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

Download the firmware from the Download tab after following the link. You should be able to find user guides and other help for your router there too. Downloading the firmware should allow you to use the router. The CD just contained that info.

Hello, my internet service provider gave a preinstalled modem to use, however I would like to use my Linksys Wireless - G ADSL Home Gateway to be able to connect my devices to the internet wirelessly......

No. Your wireless router will not be recognized as a modem, nor will your service provider allow it if it would work. Plug the router into the modem.

Plug a cat 5 wire in from the yellow jack on the router to the same on the modem (it may not be yellow). The rest is software. Reboot everything and run the wizards depending upon the version of windows you are using, which you don't mention, BTW.

Your service provider may offer to help you set up your home network. Give them a call.

Thanks for your question @

A friend gave me his router to instal to my

You should do a factory reset using the reset button on the back using a paperclip.

Then you should insert the cd that your friend should also have given you (he didnt Hmm) if not you open an internet explorer page while hooked up (by wire) to the router and type into the address bar on most netgear

The username is admin
and the password is 1234

From there you can use the setting your ISP gives you and also set wireless up.
