Question about Nikon D100 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Nikon D100 randomly has "err" code flashing

My D100 performs fine one minute and flashes 'err' the next. This happens on auto and on manual. The pictures look fine (unless on manual and need to change the exposure)but the only way to get it to stop flashing 'err' is to turn it off and turn it back on. I freelanced with this camera for three years and I think, or at least hope, it is not user error.

Re: Nikon D100 randomly has "err" code flashing

You need a new shutter box.
It may be worth cleaning the contacts on both camera and lens.
Clean the contacts in the lens mount using a fiberglass "pencil" designed specifically for cleaning contacts. These are available at just about any photo supply store/firm.

send it to nikon. seem like a common problem

Nikon d80 err code

While I can't speak specifically to the D-80, my D-90 users manual say the ERR message indicates a camera malfunction and can be cleared by tripping the shutter. The only way I can do this on my D-90 is to turn the camera off and back on. Sometimes, but not often, I have completely remove the battery and reinstall it. The users manual also says that if the problem persists to contact a Nikon service center. I suggest you contact Nikon support at before you consider repairs.

Err is usually a camera malfunctrion. Re,ove the batery,a aaaaaatuen camera switch off/on 2-3 times *as if battery still in), replace battery and try again. Read Owners manual or got to to download a manual (or to ask Nikon) and determine if your D100 has a hardware reset switch(my dc70 does) and utilize that. If tht does not solve the issue, then service by an authorized Nikon tech is advised.

Nikon D100 Manual shooting help

The mode dial (topside left) must be set to M. That's it for manual settings - the camera won't check anything, and certainly shouldn't require the flash. You need to choose your own shutter speed and aperture settings to get a good photo, but the camera will let you take a picture no matter how you have it set.

Nikon D100 SLR Built in Flash Repair

That's hard to answer until it is seen by the repair person, a reputable repair shop might be able to cannibalize another camera for the pop up flash parts pretty cheap and you just have to pay his hourly rate (the big variable). If the camera still functions otherwise and even the pop-up flash still works, you may want to go low-tech and hold it down with black electricians tape. You can turn off the flash so it won't want to pop up even in low light situations. If you use a flash attachment it will produce better results anyway. The D100 is a tough camera, lots of photojournalists were the first to embrace it for its durability out in the field. (metal body as opposed to plastic parts)

Nikon d100 locked

Have you tried to reset the camera? I seen this a few times .. and the camera reset did the trick. I've never heard of the motor noise though.

My D100 will not accept CF cards

You can always try the reset button. It is under the flap where the USB/Video out/ and power connector is. It is just above the power connector.

Nikon d-90 keeps reading out 'err'

The "ERR" error message is a sequence failure and most common problems are shutter, aperture control or sequence motor drive system. When the problem repeats frequently, it will increase until total camera failure. Cameras in need of epairs should be sent to a Nikon Authorized Service Center like Southern Photo in Miami. Lots of repair information on all types of cameras can be found at so check it out for more repair information.

D100 shooting problems

Can you report what the dial and menu settings are?

My best assessment would be that the dial setting is on something other than Auto, like Manual, and the Aperture and/or shutter speed are way off. Flip it to Auto and take another shot. Report back.
