Hi guys, I have a darling T41 that won't boot up*. The power button works fine and when I switch the machine on the '1' (?) and the Caps Lock (A) buttons light up as well as the battery (full)...

I suspect the video cable connections are loose, and/or video cable is damaged.

Hopefully the motherboard does not have a crack, or cracks in it, and one, or more circuit traces are damaged. (Stretched to breaking)
A hair puller when trying to diagnose, or spot a broken circuit trace due to a cracked motherboard.

I suggest either taking it to a pro, or disassemble the laptop down to the bare motherboard in your hand. (Check connections, and see if components are seated. Also check for a cracked motherboard, and damaged circuit traces)

[ Circuit Traces:
Think of them as very thin copper wires on the Printed Circuit Board. (PCB)
The PCB in this case is a laptop motherboard,

A Circuit Trace is also known as a Signal Trace ]

IBM T42 2379 screen flickers very much

We have the T40 model laptops at my work and I have found that when the screen begins to flicker that the internal video cable is beginning to break. It is possible to replace the cable by purchasing a used, and same model laptop from EBay and trading the parts.
To attempt this you will need to remove the keyboard, upper framing, and the framing around the monitor. You should be able to replace just the cable.

IBM thinkpad T41 -> get

The IBM Thinkpad has a very strong security system.

If you are seeing a lock symbol when booting then somebody has set the supervisor password. If you can't remember it or guess it (try "password", "admin", "pass", etc) then you need to find the person that set the supervisor password.

Once the supervisor password is set the T41 is very well protected and it can't be reset by removing the laptop battery or CMOS battery.

There is a way to read the password from the protection chip but this is very complicated and requires taking the laptop apart and building your own chip reader.

The instructions for doing this are are:

Hope this helps,

IBM Thinkpad T41 Freezes Randomly

THe heat issue would shut down your laptop or turn it off. This sounds like either a CPU problem or a motherboard. Most likely a motherboard problem.

Unfortunately, you need similar working parts to test physically.

Ibm t41 sound not working

Just to try the obvious...
The volume buttons on the laptop underneath the screen work independently to the volume controls in Windows. Have you tried pressing and holding the volume up button and then playing a sound?

T41 will turn on and then immediatly go to sleep

Check that the hard disk is in working order.
If the hard disk will not spin up... sometimes the system will just shut off.

It may be a bad motherboard.. usually a damaged or failing capacitor will cause the system to not stay powered up long enough.. capacitors usually create a steady flow of electricity... if it can't hold a steady charge it will behave as you've mentioned.

T41 IBM thinkpad monitor goes off

Saw exactly the same think on another t41 i was trying to fix. If it was moved at all screen went off.

Turned out it was corrosion on the motherboard that was causing the problem.

Has it been liquid damaged or got damp in the past?
