T41 screen intermittantly flickers then locks up

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is going wrong with my T41 2378DHU every now and then the screen will flicker and glitch then I can't do anything it just locks up and I have to just hit the power button, and even after that it takes a few times to work again I usually get a gray screen on the reboot?
I've run onboard PCdoctor diagnostics and Geeksquad full script diagnostic both passed no problems found? updated all the drivers and bios from system update utility any help is greatly appreciated

I have what sounds like the same issue. Randomly, the screen will flicker or lines appear across the screen and the laptop will lockup. If I press down on the left wrist pad the screen will clear up, but it stays locked up. The last thing I did to the computer was add more memory about 6 months ago to the DIMM slot on the back side of the board. The issues started happening about 1 month ago.

Soldering Iron will not help.. You need to Hot air bathe the board on the bottom and use Hot air or IR on the top to reflow the components..BGA = Ball Grid Array.. Google and you can find more info.. Good luck!..

(Theres postings of individuals doing this with a Automotive heat-gun but the preheat and timing as well as temperatures are critical to the process so I'd say its a No-go w/out a rework station).. Temp fix to a perm. Problem if it does work...

Flickers after 5min of use. Perfect sound, turns on fine and excellent picture quality when in blue screen menu mode. Why?

This intermittent problem is very difficult to rectify. Just contact the authorised service center for Hitachi at your town. The work is really a skilled one, that a user cannot do it with ease.

IBM T42 2379 screen flickers very much

We have the T40 model laptops at my work and I have found that when the screen begins to flicker that the internal video cable is beginning to break. It is possible to replace the cable by purchasing a used, and same model laptop from EBay and trading the parts.
To attempt this you will need to remove the keyboard, upper framing, and the framing around the monitor. You should be able to replace just the cable.

IBM thinkpad T41 -> get

Hi,

The IBM Thinkpad has a very strong security system.

If you are seeing a lock symbol when booting then somebody has set the supervisor password. If you can't remember it or guess it (try "password", "admin", "pass", etc) then you need to find the person that set the supervisor password.

Once the supervisor password is set the T41 is very well protected and it can't be reset by removing the laptop battery or CMOS battery.

There is a way to read the password from the protection chip but this is very complicated and requires taking the laptop apart and building your own chip reader.

The instructions for doing this are are:

Hope this helps,

Chris

Are you sure you're not trying to thread through the 'chain' port? I've done this a few times, almost pulling my hair out trying to figure out why the thread wouldn't go through. Then realized this simple mistake on my part.

T41 will turn on and then immediatly go to sleep

Check that the hard disk is in working order.
If the hard disk will not spin up... sometimes the system will just shut off.

It may be a bad motherboard.. usually a damaged or failing capacitor will cause the system to not stay powered up long enough.. capacitors usually create a steady flow of electricity... if it can't hold a steady charge it will behave as you've mentioned.

Did you measure diagonally from corner to corner? This is usually how all manufacturers quote screen size. Hope this helps
