Canon Digital Rebel autofocus problem (EOS 300 and 350)

A number of complaints from Digital Rebel EOS owners reported that the auto focus feature suddenly stopped working. In some case the picture was showing a dark shadow on the lower side.

The problem is a factory defect caused by a factory defective autofocus sub mirror. The problem is known to most repairers ( and sadly to users ). Although the defect due to design problem, Canon never acknowledge that this is a factory defect, and never issued a recall and free repair notice for Digital Rebel defective autofocus.

THe repair is done replacing the mirror. The cost ranges between $120 and $180.

As first line of action, check any of the links below, and call Canon. Complain, and see if you can get discounted repair.

If that does not work, the alternatives are using the camera with no AF, or having the camera repaired at own expenses. Often the sub mirror may get even more stuck, and pictures start showing the black shadow from mirror on lower part of the picture.

This is the cause of your troubles:

Here one of several repair websites dealing with the problem. I quote:

"Most autofocus repairs are related to problems with the small mirror under the main mirror (known as the sub-mirror). There is a plastic post that operated this mirror which sometimes breaks. We replace this post with a brass pin so that the problem will not recur. "

Here one of the many forums on the problem. Please read the testimonial from other users, it is quite instructive.

Good luck.

I have a canon1000dband have brought a Tamron 55-200mm lens that will not autofocus. The ring is turning and the the lens goes in and out but just wont focus. my other two lens will autofocus. Please help

Hi Lyndsay. If the lens barrel is twisting, and the optics are not bringing the the object in the viewfinder in and out of focus, there is a problem with the lens. The motor is operating but there is a disconnect with the optics. This lens should be returned to Tamron for repair.

The twisting of the barrel is the lens "hunting" for correct focus. Now, this is not to say there is a problem if the barrel is twisting but the image is getting sharper and then blurry again. When this is happening, the lens is hunting for focus, but there isn't sufficient light for the camera to sense when the subject is in focus. The camera is commanding the lens to find focus by running the lens to minimum distance and out to maximum distance to find it. If this is the case, bring the camera to a well lit space and see if it can successfully find focus. If it does - the problem is the lack of light.

I hope this helps and good luck!

My canon G9 does not seem to give good focusing results. Pictures seem slightly out of focus specially with flash on Auto

Your autofocus may need to be re calibrated-- this is not something you can do on your own, but it is something that could be done at a local camera repair shop. Take it in and see if they would be able to adjust it or give you an estimate.

Hi mfkcolumbus,

Did you check the firmware version? If it's not v. 1.02, then get it at the Kodak support site and flash that firmware to your camera. If it is 1.02, then you may try to reflash that same firmware. Sometimes this helps strait'n out things.

Hope this helps.

Canon EOS Rebel T2 300X Won't Autofocus or Take Picture. I can manually focus and take a picture, but when autofocus is on, it focuses for a second and then goes out of focus and won't let me snap a...

This may be a problem with the autofocus itself, try the following:

  • If you have a different lens, see if the autofocus works with the other lens. If it does, there may be something wrong with your lens.
  • Clean the contacts (the little metal things between the lens and the camera) with a slightly moist, lint-free cloth
  • Try replacing the battery in the camera
If none of this helps, you may have to take your camera to a qualified repair person to get them to have a look at it.

Good luck!
