This software has problems with certain P4 based Intel systems.
Try an AMD (Athlon) based PC, with XP SP2 or Vista as the operating system.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 x2 D/C 5200+...i ma running XP PRO ver 2002 sp pk 2......when I donload sp 3 after reboot i get a blue screen with a whole of code on it and nothing else

Just do a system restore to the last restore point right before you did your update to sp3.

You can get step by step instructions with pictures on how to do it here:

If you want your installation disk for formatting your system, you can go for any other XP or Vista or Se7en OS Disk to format your computer other than your old XP disk. It will not cause any problem.

Locks up during installation process at a random percentage of completion

If you have sufficient hard disk space, copy SP2 from the CD to the hard disk first and then install it from there.

32 bit program to 64 bit opperating system

From the Autocad webiste:
System Requirements AutoCAD® Civil and AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2009 Recommended System Requirements Recommended configuration (excluding server components used with project management capabilities):
  • Intel® Pentium® 4 (3 GHz or higher); AMD Athlon™; multiple processors supported, dual-core supported
  • 32-bit only: Microsoft® Windows Vista® Ultimate/Business/Enterprise, Microsoft® Windows XP (SP2)
Note: Windows XP 64 and Windows Vista 64 are supported in 32-bit compatibility mode only.

Here's how you should be able to run it in compatibility mode:
1. Right click on the Autocad Icon in your start menu
2. click on Properties
3. click on the Compatibility tab at the top
4. check the box next to Compatibility Mode and select Vista 32 bit if it is given as an option.

I don't have Vista here, but that is how it works in XP and I did do a search and it appears to be the same in Vista.

Too slow

the only way to improve graphics is to upgrade your graphics card and ensure that you have enough system memory and proccesor power to run the game as it should do. If you have a 32MB or 64MB card then maybe you should go for atleast 128MB
