If its an IDE cable (Flat wide one) ensure the last drive (Operating system) one is plugged in here set to MASTER, with the slave drive connected along this ribbon set to SLAVE.

If SATA cable usually narrow and red plug into any SATA port on the mobo, doesnt matter which order.

I got a diagnostics done on my compaq presario pc sr5130NX. i have a virus. my files are backed up how do i get rid of the virus. do i need to restore the computer, if so how?

You could do two things. First I would download malwarebytes, update it and run a quick scan. I would thendownload Microsoft Security Essentials and install it. It's free. If you have XP or higher, you could do a system restore to a date prior to you having problems.

My monitor has kicked into sleep mode and won't "wake up".

Unplug all the Cables from Compaq Presario 5103 CL and leave the Keyboard, mouse and monitor cable pluged in.

Now make sure the power cable of the monitor should be pluged in and the power cable of the tower should be pluged in.

Now to check if the montor is fine just unplug the video cable only which will show no input signal on the screen. If it shows this signal the monitor is fine. Plug back in the video cable.

If the monitor is going to sleep mode it might be possible that the old computer ( Compaq Presario 5103 CL ) is in stand by mode. hit any key on the keyboard and it should come back .

If it is not in the stand by mode then do one thing. Check the same monitor with the new computer. If it is working. Perfect ..!

Do one thing now ..!

Unplug all the cables from your old system and then press the power button for 30 sec and let it go. Now plug the keyboard, mouse and the monitor try again.
If it works Perfect. If not ..!

Then you need to open the tower and check on the processor FAN is it running..? If its not running you will not get the display as the fan is responsible for the display on the screen. Otherwise...!

Check the Tower possibly the Tower is not getting the power.

Try these steps and let me know If it works

I found a bios up date.
You need to choose which operating system your are using.
here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=3436820&
It looks like they don't offer an update if your OS is XP but the newer OS's show a bios update.
let me know if this works

Cd player doesn't work, tried using an external driver and that won't load? Compaq Presario SR5130NX windows vista

sounds like you have a driver or filter issue. this is not uncommon. give this a try to remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key2_bing.gif

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

SR5130NX Desktop Computer

Can you hear the hard drive spinning? I believe you contacted a virus which got into the Master Boot Record. Same thing happened to me two weeks ago. I had to reformat. In your case you need to (or have someone) remove the hard drive from the laptop. Slave it to another unit with a USB bridge and retrieve the data (if possible). Then use these three programs on it while it's still a slave: Dr. Web, Malware Bytes, and Superantispyware. Once you've found all the bugs you may have to restore some of the protected files, you can do this with a Windows OS Repair.
