Re: question

You mean the setup doesn't load? Also when installing Windows, the first part it copies data to the just formatted harddrive. Then it reboots, but make sure it doesn't reboot from CD because then it wil start all over again. It must boot from harddrive after it copied files to your drive.

The setup data is located on you HDD from that moment on.

Or isn't this what you mean?

Safest is way to install a removable drive tray such as Welland EZStor ME-751 Trayless HDD Rack 5.25" Bay for 3.5" SATA HDD/SSD - Anti-Shock, Scratch-Proof.
Then you can swap HDD anytime.
You can also install new (now upgrade) Windows 8.1 on a 2nd HDD internally. But sometimes the 2nd OS can damage the first OS if ou are not careful with C: drive letter.

I have put a 500g hdd in my hpHP Dc7900 desk now it wont restart

for one you will need a (FUll VERSION) of windows and a licensed microsoft keyboard ( for the F-8 button) depending on your computer you'll need to get into setup to boot from the disc a fresh install of the OS is all you can do on a raw unformatted HDD you'll need to create a new partition , then after that place the new OS on that partition (note always) use the Quick NTFS and your set , if you
already have a separate C/: you can use it to format the second drive (also an HDD uses 2 cables 1 is the IDE or SATA and 2 is power

I have a Maxtor one touch 2 external hard drive,serial#2dd10020,worked fine on Windows XP,I'am now using it on Windows 7,it shows up in computer as drive Z,I cannot unlock it to get to my files, any help...

ok for one your computer no matter what OS you are using stores no drive letter , a drive letter is only given in the order as it is
installed on your system for example if you use 2 internal HDD
and one external HDD your computers C: drive will be the master
the F: will be the slave and the external will be G: , now if you have changed the order of the drives from your last OS then it
will conflict to the last drive letter given , your unit will know
what letter it was given so it must be in the same location for
the new OS , there is also the possibility that Windows 7 doesn't
support the driver for that unit , you can try hooking it up to
another computer retrieving your data , then hooking it back
up to windows 7 run its software , then installing the data back
into your HDD

Hard disk drive not detected

firstly check your cable connections, then log onto your bios setup menu during startup and check whether the Hard drive is detected by your bios, if it is then you can try to format the harddrive using the ntfs system (use the long formatt) if you are using windows xp or later if using any earlier os then formatt with the FAT32 system.
If your HDD is not detected by the bios then try to download bios updates for your motherboard and install thed in windows. is this does not work then its time to get a new HDD. thanks

Samsung 200gb hdd

When u bought a new hdd, it shud not have any partition on it. but in ur case, I assume u have formatted it to ntfs but no operating system is installed in it.

If u want to make the new hdd as slave and have another old hdd as primary, that have already an operating system installed in it, then the problem shud be hdd boot priority in bios. Enter ur bios and check for hdd boot priority and put the old hdd to the top most order, then restart. this shud fix the problem.

If u installed OS in ur new hdd (win xp),
1) ntldr or is missing on root dir. (c:\). If u have another computer that works and have xp installed, just put this new hdd along with the current hdd and boot to windows. Copy ntldr and to your new hdd. Or another way is just repair using windows xp boot cd.
2)the windows partition is not set 'active'. to set active, boot into winxp setup and press 'r'. this will lead to recovery console. type ur passwrod for admin (def=none). use diskpart command to set active. for easy way, put the new hdd to another computer. boot to windows. rightclick my computer, choose manage. on left pane select disk manager. rightclick on ur partition, then set active.

Hope this help
