Simpletech pininfarina 120gb

I have an hp pavilion, windows xp - home and i've had the harddrive for about 7 months, i all of a sudden can't detect it on my laptop anymore. i accidentally dropped it about 1 feet from the floor so i don't know if that's what is causing this problem.

Re: simpletech pininfarina 120gb

You may have caused any number of problems when you dropped it....step one is check and see if "a disk" (not the hard drive) can be read....either CD or floppy (as they are called) with either boot or recovery information on it. If one or the other can then it's the drive p-r-o-b-a-b-l-y. I say probably because you didn't say anything about the you see the normal boot up. If you do that says with 99% confidence that the mother board and ram are working. If it was on when you dropped it (bless me mother for I have sinned) your problem is even more likely to be the hard disk.
Lastly....after going thru this diagnosis....find out what a replacement hard drive will cost. Some are anything but cheap and more often than not you can use a cheaper, even smaller if you know how much space you took, hard drive. Your laptop mfg will have a list of what you have in your machine (and expensive parts)...check or google the internet for your part. To install is not a major problem....but...if you have one of those goofy (no CD OS machines) you can try to convince your supplier to give you a copy or buy a copy. Depending on how old your machine is....and if all you do is surf, shop, chat, might even want to put Win98SE on it.....(yeah yeah I can hear all kinds of people, no....but A) it's cheap if you can't find a friend to give you their old copy and B) It will run QUICK (Win 2000 or NT are even better options). The problem with laptops is they typically are slow....older models...
and the overhead of XP cripples them. If you have an office suite you will be amazed at the performance difference (and you can usually find old copies of software inexpensively). Old by the way means only a few years back...the bloatware of Microsoft today is not typically necessary for the VAST majority of computer users....Amen

HP windows 8 does not recognize simpleteck hard drive

I purchased a SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx for my Vista machine and all was well. Then I purchased a Windows 7 machine. It would not recognize the devise. I contacted SimpleTech only to be told my model cannot be used on machines newer that the Vista. Recently I purchased a Windows 8.1, did a little research, plugged the SimpleTech into the 8.1 and reformatted it using the Windows feature. The SimpleTech is alive and well on my 8.1.

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

I have a pininfarina simpletech 500GB usb external harddrive that does not show up in the My Computer folder of Windows Explorer. Tried hooking it up to a different computer with the same results; no...

If it is a new hard drive then it needs to be formatted. You can do this by going into your start menu - control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disc manager. I could be a little off on the wording as I don't have my computer handy, but in the disc management you should be able to right click on the drive in here and choose format. This will format the drive to be used. I hope this helps.
