If you turn on your laptop and no display ever shows, your issue is with either the LCD backlight or the motherboard (since the video card is built-in the motherboard). This will be easy to diagnose.
1.) Plug an external monitor (one which you know works) into the VGA port of your laptop.
2.) Turn on the laptop.
3.) Hold down the FN key (lower-left corner of the keyboard) and press the "CRT/LCD" key (it will be located on the number keys or F1-F12. You do this to tell the laptop that it needs to send the video signal to the external monitor instead of its built-in LCD screen.
If you can see a display on the external monitor, then the issue is with the laptop's LCD screen (about $200 for the part plus labor to install). If you can NOT see a display on the external monitor, then your problem is with the motherboard ($300-$500 for the part plus a lot in labor cost for installation).

Hey, i'm sure you've moved on to another monitor in the past 4 years, but just so you know I had the exact same problem with a cousin's monitor of this type. I've been dinking around and pushed the "auto" button often and held it down a few times. randomly, it started working again! no idea how this problem started, but having at it with the auto button seems to do it!

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). Sony Ericsson PC suit includes the following applications and its uses are these:-

it is going into sleep mode, good luck with this.... i am currently asking how to get my hard drive to quite putting my monitor into sleep mode.

although it hasn't worked for me because my screen stays black, one of the options given to me is to try to start in safe mode and then adjust your settings to "never" on the energy/sleep/hibernate mode

some one else suggested that i remove and reseat the video card

If you don?t see the start button I would next suggest you connect this monitor to another computer to see if the problem goes with the monitor or stays with the computer. To change the resolution back to something more reasonable go to the control panel (start, settings, control panel) and double left click on the Display icon. Click on the settings tab. The color quality should be set a high as possible, usually 32 bit or true color. Then click on the Advanced button in the lower right corner and on the next screen click on the Monitor tab. In the Monitor settings make sure the Screen refresh rate is set between 70 and 75 Hertz (the higher the number the less obvious the screen flicker will be but don?t set any higher). Click on the OK button to go back to the previous screen. Once that is set you want to increase the Screen Resolution using the slider bar to the left. For a 19? screen you would want to set it to a minimum of at least 1024 x 768. The typical setting is 1280 x 1024 depending on monitor / video card capabilities and personal tastes. Once you get the resolution back to the original settings your screen will display as it did before the ?change?. If you find another resolution setting you like better we?ll need to make some adjustments to the monitor itself. Just let us know. Ordinarily screen resolution changes doesn?t just happen, it?s usually the result of a program, user or problem. If that is the case you?ll need to post anther question along with details about what is happening just before the change occurs along with your operating system and any other pertinent information.

The problem is dry solder on Invertor board.Resolder all Invertor transistors and transformer.
