It depends on your iMac. If it's one of the old tray loading G3s, you practically have to take it apart. Here is an excellent resource for tray-loader repair: http://www.djonmac.com/

The slot loaders have a door in back, and you just take that off to replace it. I know this is an old question, and the last "expert" just gave you a sarcastic crack. I hope you found your answer already, but just in case, here's mine.

The last "expert" has replaced more PRAM batteries in G3 iMacs than he cares to remember. (well in excess of 200). He would not recommend trying to replace the battery in a slot-loader through the door as there is a 90% chance of breaking the battery holder while getting the old battery out. If you have done it sucessfully then you have been lucky. Also some iMacs have a cover over the battery-holder. getting that off through the door is nigh-on impossible.
Apple didn't put the door there to replace the battery, If they had they would have put the battery in a more sensible place and made it more accessible.

Imac g4 lcd black screen replaced pram battery

If you can find an older SVGA monitor, try hooking it up to the port on the back of your mac. If you get video then chances are the LCD display is shot.

Battery for iBook 14inch not recognized by iBook

you could try resetting your pram..?

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.
Resetting PMU on PowerBook or iBook computers In some troubleshooting situations, if resetting PRAM does not resolve an issue, resetting the PMU may be the next appropriate step. For information on when this is appropriate and for instructions on how to reset the PMU in your PowerBook computer, see Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU).
