It depends on your iMac. If it's one of the old tray loading G3s, you practically have to take it apart. Here is an excellent resource for tray-loader repair: http://www.djonmac.com/
The slot loaders have a door in back, and you just take that off to replace it. I know this is an old question, and the last "expert" just gave you a sarcastic crack. I hope you found your answer already, but just in case, here's mine.
The last "expert" has replaced more PRAM batteries in G3 iMacs than he cares to remember. (well in excess of 200). He would not recommend trying to replace the battery in a slot-loader through the door as there is a 90% chance of breaking the battery holder while getting the old battery out. If you have done it sucessfully then you have been lucky. Also some iMacs have a cover over the battery-holder. getting that off through the door is nigh-on impossible.
Apple didn't put the door there to replace the battery, If they had they would have put the battery in a more sensible place and made it more accessible.
