Question about Acer Aspire 5002WLCi Notebook
I have an Acer Extensa 5420, yet could not find any area to post in, so I'm going to post my question here.
My laptop will be running normally and then out of the blue, the screen shuts off. There's no keyboard command to exit the blank screen. The laptop is also not in sleep mode, as the fan is active and running. The only way to fix the problem is to turn the power off and then back on, whereupon the computer boots up to the screen for the option of Safe Mode. Choosing Start Windows Normally results in no further problems, until the next time the screen decides to knock out.
Now I've researched a little bit and have found quite a few other instances of this happening. I just want to know if this is Acer's problem, which I'm leaning towards, or if there is any way to fix this. I also would like to know if it is a hardware problem, which piece of hardware it would be, so I can go to Acer and complain.
Also it has nothing to do with updating video card drivers, I've done this.
Take off the back panel, remove fan, check airway next to fan for clogged passages. Overheating is the number one issue in unexpected shut downs.

It appears this problem is just simple overheating of the processor. Remove the bottom cover and take an air hose to the fan and give it a good blowing out. Blow out everything, dust gets into the airways and cuts down the air flow efficiency. Be very careful with the bottom screws. They are held to the cover with tiny washers on the backside. Do not try to pull the screws loose from the cover. Leave them in the holes and carefully remove the cover. This should take care of the problem. It did mine anyway on my Acer Extensa 5420.

Same here. I bought mine at Best Buy on 1/15/2008. It is a completely random problem and only a shutdown will recover the computer. I did find one solution and that is to turn off the screen saver. I am not saying this will solve the problem, but with the screen saver off, I have not seen the screen blackout happen yet.
Acer sucks. I will NEVER by an acer again.

I got my acer extensa 5420 in February from Best Buy online. My screen blacksout as well. I took it to best buy and they updated the bios under my warrenty. It also has powering up issues. like the harddrive doesnt wanna start up..it blink 3 times and shuts back off. They said i have to send it back to acer and it would be about a month and they would just replace it with the same mother board. I don't wanna be without a laptop for a month or more or get the same problem back. it all seems hopeless!!

You need to update the BIOS to v1.16, as described above. I don't know why the idiots at Best Buy and Acer will not acknowledge this and perform the update for their customers - it only takes 5 minutes! Yet another example of horrible customer support and service!

Update your bios on your laptop at http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html this solved the random crashes and random blackouts on my extensa 5620
i had v1.05 and updated it to v1.31 and now it runs perfectly
although be careful when updating your bios as doing it incorrectly can cause your computer to malfunction
and make sure you are connected to a power outlet when doing this.

After experiencing the blackout screen issue numerous times, I ended up updating the bios from v1.14 to v1.16. There are specific instructions on how to do this on the following website--although it's a 'DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK' solution:
See Dave41's instructions on 2/09. If you DO decide to do this, follow his instructions TO THE LETTER. Be aware, if you have a service contract with Best Buy and something goes wrong during the update, it will void your contract.

My Acer extensa purchased @ Best Buy on 12/31/07 does the same thing. All the Acer Blank outs I seen throughout the internet were on this model purchased in the last week of 2007 or the first week of 2008. My sons each purchased different Acer models recently and they are not experiencing any issues. We need to continue to contact Acer and possibly Best Buy (if that is where everyone got their's, too.)

See this thread for ongoing discussion of this problem - it is widespread, and Acer so far is giving us the big blowoff!
