Question about Mitsubishi WS48511 48" Rear Projection Television

Mitsubishi WS48511 TV will not power on completely.

TV initializes properly when plugged in. Press power and the TV will start to turn on, but shuts down after a couple of seconds. Don't see any blown caps on DM board or anywhere else. Power LED self diagnosis test returns 1-2 No Error. Anybody have any advice?

Can you suggest a good way of testing out caps other than visual inspection, that doesn't require removing them from the board?

Was watching TV (Mitsubishi WS-48511) when it suddenly went off. Tried to turn back on and Green LED stays on for 2-3 seconds then the TV goes off. Have pressed reset button and also unplugged from power for more the 15 mins. Nothing. There was no symptoms of things being wrong or starting to go wrong. Just suddenly shut off and can not be powered back on.

TV was working fine on Thur evening, 9/11/08.  Turned off TV for the night. The next evening turned on TV and it would not come on.  The green LED power light comes on like normal, then after a couple of seconds clicks off. Unplugged TV; pressed the reset button; pushed in the menu button for 8 seconds.  Nothing fixed the problem.   Any idea on what the problem is?  How much is it going to cost to have the problem repaired?

Have you checked the pico fuses on the bottom side of the PC board? They are small ceramic fuses soldered directly to the runners. They have been known to blow and your set will not power up. Hope this helps, if you need anything further let me know. Also sometimes the 1000uf caps don't show any signs of swelling but can still be bad.

The only way to test capacitors in circuit is with an ESR meter these meters will spot a weak capacitor really fast. Most electronic supply companies should have one or be able to order one for you.

I also have a dead WS-48511 that turns on for a few seconds and then turns itself off. It was purchased January 2003, It did this the first time in March 2007. The convergence IC and fuse had to be replaced, under warranty. It did it again June 2008. This time it isn't covered by a warranty. I'm replacing the TV. It takes a soldering gun to remove/replace the convergence IC. Last time I check circuit boards don't do well removing the same part multiple times.
I talked to the repairmen and he said on some WS-... TVs there is a convergence chip for each channel. On the 48511 there is one chip for all three channels, I.E. a bad design.
I was excepted a $2500 TV to last more than 5.5 years.
The repair cost would have been around $450 the first time, two trips.

Try a reset. Start by unplugging for 1 minute, then plug back in & if still won't restart try the following. If none of the following work, you will need a technician.

Mitsubishi TV, WD 60735; TV shuts off shortly after powering up.

It could be but a couple of other possible reasons---they had problems with this set and its brothers with caps in the main power supply puffing up and causing this "hard to turn on" issue.

A second reason is dust/dirt inside the unit.

All air is coming in via the front of the set and exits the rear--enough dust gets inside and the fans slow down or the lamp gets too hot and set shuts down---don't try this in the house: we take them with back cover off outside the building (on a ramp) and with air clean them out completely--try not to blow it inside the screen. It looks like a dust storm in most cases but can cause exactly the problem you have.

This should discharge the unit and allow it to come back on.

I have tried to turn my television on and the status light blinks for about a minute, you can hear the TV try to start up and then the whole system shuts down without anything actually powering up. Also...

Unplug the tv for about a minute - plug it in and press the reset button on the front of the tv - hold it until the light blinks. The set should come on in a minute of two - if not try the same routine again.

UNPLUG TV AND THEN PLUG BACK IN---TURN ON---GREEN POWER LIGHT COMES ON FOR A MOMENT AND GOES OFF.

PRESS AND HOLD “device”(or input) and “menu” buttons on front of tv for at least 5 seconds and then release both together.

Watch for power light to blink in a sequence:

1 blink-then 2 blinks-------no error

2 blink-then 1 blink-------X-ray protection

2 blink-then 2 blink-------SHORT PROTECTION*******

2 blink-then 3 blink---------deflection circuit problem

2 blink-then 4 blink---------vertical circuit problem

******2, then 2 is most common---usually means one of the fuses that protect the Convergence IC or IC’s is blown---set will detect no voltage to convergence IC and shut down.

SET WILL REPEAT BLINK ERROR CODE UP TO 5 TIMES AND THEN TO GET IT TO REPEAT MORE YOU HAVE TO UNPLUG SET AND TRY TO TURN ON AGAIN.

IF IT IS 2 AND THEN 2---USUALLY
CONVERGENCE CIRCUIT PROBLEM

Mitsubishi WS-48511 Device Screen Will Not Go Away

David,
Let's start with unplugging the set from the wall power for 15 minutes. This will hard reset the micro... While that's unplugged inspect the buttons on the front panel of the Tv to see that none are stuck in a pushed-in condition. Plug the unit back in, power it up and if all works okay you're back in business... If not, let try a keyboard unlock. Press and hold the "menu" button on the front panel for 10 seconds. You won't see any on-screen changes but then try to select an input from the buttons on the front of the Tv.
After you've done these drop me a note and if we haven't solved it will try some other things..
